For those suggesting that EVERY SINGLE ONE OF US calling it a clear Gradovich win was influenced by the commentary is 100% wrong.
How is this a question? Gradovich lost three in a row. Velez then lost nine in a row, pretty clearly.
clearly many of the posters on here were very influenced by the commentary. nobody who actually knows boxing and knows what they're watching would have called this a one-sided fight. and velez actually deserved the win despite all the bogus comments about his "body language"...this is about outscoring your opponent....not a posing contest.
exhibit a in the "i believe everything the announcers say because i have no ability to critically ****yse a fight and think for myself" express.
boxing forums are interesting fascinating places for understanding the herd mentality...because they really show how easy it is for the media to brainwash and manipulate people. how completely dependent grown men and women are on others for their opinions. if it wasn't for the hbo commentary, a lot of these guys really wouldn't know what to think.
Not a fan of IBs RBRs then?:rofl http://www.boxingforum24.com/showthread.php?t=523621 Seriously guy. IB might be one of the most respected posters on the forum and probably watches scores and comments on more fights than anyone else on here. In fact, IBs RBRs are probably the single most valuable resource on the forums and likely the whole site. You clearly DKSAIB.
118-110 First 2 rounds to Velez, next 10 to Gradovich. Good fight with almost every round being highly competitive but to me it seemed Gradovich was clearly meeting the criteria better.
I see. So anyone who disagrees with you does so only because they can't think for themselves - is that it? Whatever you say genius - you're clearly a lot smarter than the average guy.
Close fight I don't think the draw was a huge robbery or anything, but Gradovich's shots clearly effected Velez more than Velez's shots effected Evgeny. Wouldn't mind a rematch as it was a fun fight
Um, no. I could just as easily say you were swayed by the nonconformist hipsters moaning all night long on Twitter about how the HBO team were consistently ignoring Velez's "excellent body work" in combination - of which I was fully bemusedly aware the entire time watching. (I nearly always check on Twitter, curious to see how other fans are viewing the action to provide a counterbalance to my own read and/or the commentators') ...which actually isn't true, both Jones and Kellerman did mention it here and there. It just didn't warrant a whole lot of mention, since the body shots a) weren't slowing Gradovich down, b) weren't landing as cleanly and forcefully as many of Gradovich's head shots and c) simply weren't enough to have tipped otherwise not very close rounds his way. Admit it. You were logged in, saw a couple of the "cool table" kids saying it was close or that Velez should've been ahead in the late going, and let that bias your opinion as much as you claim people allowed the HBO team's word to bias theirs. ...and yes, HBO was riding Evgeny's **** pretty hard, in particular Lampley. I have no love for Lampley and no respect for his cheerleading brand of "****ysis", however - and while I do respect Kellerman and to a greater extent Jones neither is some font of wisdom that would ever cause me to second-guess my own interpretation of the action. They happened to be correct - Gradovich's pressure, volume, and heavy shots snapping back Velez's head all night made the difference in most rounds. YES, it does make for a tantalizing byline that Velez managed to a) outbox Gradovich on the outside early on despite coming in with the "puncher's" reputation and b) indeed bested the renowned body-puncher at his own game, scoring backfoot combos liberally on the body of Gradovich while limiting Gradovich's connects on his own body with his movement. That doesn't change anything. Velez won the body punching battle, sure (to his credit, and perhaps to Gradovich's slight embarrassment) - but he lost the war. The only lazy ****yst here is you, for chalking up any differing opinion to "HBO brainwashing", as though nothing else - like, you know, actual understanding of how boxing works and should be scored - might lead to seeing Gradovich the comfortable victor.
It was a nice fight but Gradovich landed the harder shots IMO and only clearly lost 4 rds. I hope they do this again very soon:good :smoke
These guys saying velez won or deserved the draw are brain dead. The "watch it with the audio off" suggestion cracks me up. I guess if you wanna see Gradovich win 8 or 9 rounds in silence...
It was an easy fight to score. Velez was getting his head snapped back constantly in every round from 4-12. You can give maybe about 4 rounds to Velez at best. He was getting beaten up in nearly every round compared to Gradovich who blocked Velez's punches and kept his chin tucked. There is no case for draw and no case for Velez victory. Gradovich won anywhere from 8-9 rounds. It was a clear robbery.
There is such a thing as "close but clear" in boxing. Most of these rounds were close. The middle and later rounds were not. Either way, Gradovich shaded nearly every round "close but clear." There really isn't a proper argument supporting Velez here, and I'm all about hearing opinions on close fights. But this wasn't close if you follow scoring criteria and have decent eyesight.
