That's a tough fight for him, but I think Mir is like Prime Rib to JDS where he's beef jerky to Cain. With Cain at least he will have a good chance at ending up on the ground and rolling with him while he is somewhat conscious. With JDS he may never get a chance for any techniques other than impersonating a punching bag. Mir is a live wire with anyone he ends up on the ground with.
Mir really has cleaned up his striking, but even with all the work he has done, his reflexes seem slow for striking, and he doesn't seem to be very fast on his feet for striking purposes. He is somewhat stationary, and outside of JDS trying to fight with Mir inside, where Mir can get a body lock and take him down, I don't see Mir with the sort of shot or feints to have any shot at getting JDS down. It's a very bad stylistic mismatch. Mir is the man for his accomplishments, but JDS would make him look really bad. On the other hand Mark Hunt would be a true test to JDS striking. I favor Hunts striking to be honest, but this is the sort of thing a guy like JDS needs to do. He needs to establish himself as a guy who can not only deal with wrestlers and bjj guys, but also a guy who can handle top notch strikers. In my mind he has established his style/ ability to keep a fight standing is like kryptonite to ground fighters. Now if he can prove his striking is on a level that he hangs with Mark Hunt, he will be the f'ing man. Mark Hunt still has a lot in him, he's a smart and crafty striker now.. You see how he looped the left hook on Kongo that made a blind angle to buzz him, and you see how he is really good with short punches. He may not have the legendary durability he once had, but he has a craftiness about him now with his striking that only comes with experience. If JDS can go toe to toe with Hunt and win, that will say a lot about the level of striker he is not only against ground fighters, but also against stand up fighters.
great post! Though it might be hard to sell Hunt vs Santos( hunt as #1 contender and Ufc Heavyweight champ if he wins?) it most likely would be a good fight, maybe as good a matchup as Oveereem vs JDS.
I agree with you that Cigano demolishes Mir, but I also think it's still a more meaningful and legitimate fight than dos Santos-Hunt. I think you way overrate Hunt's abilities these days. It's all well and good lauding his striking abilites, but the facts show he is so far short of a title contender it's silly. Getting finished in 1 minute by Sean McCorkle and going life and death all the way to points with Ben Rothwell does not a UFC title challenger make. Hunt's wide swinging shots and non-existent defence would make for an utter obliteration from a prime powerboxer like Cigano, and the public would think "WTF was the point of that?" - Cigano vs Mir is a much better choice, at least in my opinion. Let Hunt fight Nelson, that's more his level (could be a really exciting fight), he just isn't a contender.
Great post...glad I read it... it has enriched my knowledge of MMA...thank you for honouring me with a reply...:think
It was a proper response. Mark Hunt is a fat slob that doesn't belong in the same ring with JDS! Junior would slump his lard ass! Would be easy work too.. EASY!
stylistically yes. your prediction of JDS Oveereem: now about hunt: I think you overrate JDS's striking ability, or you underrate his potential opponents. hunt was always a wide-swinging power puncher with bad defence, but he knew how to make contact with those shots like Koa posted. His chin may have deteriorated somewhat but he is still tough as hell and has real power. enough to test JDS's chin. Remember Hunt does not equal Carwin:deal Hunt will land punches on JDS, and no I dont think Hunt will be "obliterated" by Santos. Perhaps as good a matchup as Overeem was from a entertainment perspective. Maybe better.
Cant argue with that , nicely put :good Even though i believe he'll be TKO'd in the first 3 - 4 mins (Mir) .........
