I agree, but Kovalev was probably the best p4p fighter on the planet at that time and Ward was probably #2. Not a bad showing honestly by either fighter.
This is the reasonable assessment. Ward although very good is overrated to me due to too few fights. fighting at home and bad sportsmanship. head butting and octopus manoeuvre's etc.. The best he beat had already been beaten or in the case of Krusher literally nut punched him into submission. At Super Middle Joe is still the best both in duration and number of unbeaten fighters at that weight.
Ward needed nut punches...also I think Kovalev's boozing had caught up with him at that point to be fair.
Ward and Canelo have been 2 of the most hated fighters on ESB for years. I cant think of a fighter whos gotten as much hate as them. Maybe Tank, or Teofimo were pretty close.
I dunno Floyd and Joshua spring to mind. I don't think Ward is hated anywhere near as much as Canelo. Ginger has the judges in his pocket and has been caught taking PEDS...his fanboys are also insufferable. I don't hate either. I think Ward is a little overrated and Gingers fanboys are deluded. I can still respect both fighters for what they have done and achievements. I just seperate one aspect from another.
Yeah but I don't see many threads on Ward compared to say Joshua and I know Ward isn't current but even back in the day. Someone like Floyd or Joshua seemed to create a lot more hatred some for similar and some different reasons. I think personality and fight style can add to this perception too. I think some personalities can agitate this response by either being arrogant. fake or dull. In some circumstances a combination of some or all of these attributes combined which I think applies to all three mentioned.
What’s to like about him? Turned pro at 20, has only 32 fights. Never fought outside the United States. Notoriously dirty. Has particular demands but won’t give in to others demands. Retired without facing the best in his division.
Canelo is greater. Both use hideous tactics to carve out a "legacy". Ward getting dropped, outboxed, and beaten clearly by Kovalev as his last hurrah leaves too much to be desired. He's not the favorite against any of the recent names at LHW, so his legacy exists at 168 alone.
At ESB Ward will never, ever be forgiven for utterly manhandling Carl Froch. Any thread mentioning him is therefore pointless.
I think it's more people are left wanting by the sport when in a fight of such magnitude everyone is told that what they saw is not what happened (Kovalev-Ward I).
