Who's more skilled, Lomachenko or Usyk?

When it comes to boxing using lateral movement I do think Usyk is superior when he fights on the backfoot. I don't recall Loma having much success when he danced around boxing at range, he mostly did well when he stayed midrange and came forward. When he tried backing up against Teo he really couldn't do anything and got outworked. The rounds he won convincingly was when he decided to fight more aggressively.

If Loma had Usyk's ability to quickly adapt and attack with great urgency he would most definitely have beaten Salido, Teofimo, and Haney with greater ease.

Imagine if you combine the best attributes of both Lomachenko and Usyk. Loma's skills, athletic talents, speed, footwork combined with Usyk's intelligence, toughness, tenacity, and aggression. You'd have one Ukrainian powerhouse of a fighter that would be near unbeatable IMO.

 

Dre was a serious operator and his records proves it. Serious ring IQ and ring general. Ask Kovalev whose should he took. Carl Cobra Froch and Kessler genuine tough guys did not want a rematch after beat them up comprehensively. One of the greatest attributes a fighter can have is to literally disarm your opponents.

 

Like you said, they are both very talented.

Lomachenko is incredibly skilled on the front foot and he may even be a bit better than Usyk in that regard and yet he lacks majorly in another department: the back foot. An example of his limits moving backwards is when he fought Devin Haney. Devin would set up the right hand to the body with a double jab every time and Lomachenko would do nothing about it. He jumped away from it and it would land on the same spot almost every time. I think Loma realized this from the beginning but it's almost like he isn't able to do anything about it. He gave Devin so many free punches because of that deficiency in his skill set.

Usyk, on the other hand, is incredibly skilled at boxing forwards and backwards. I say that he is somewhat better than Lomachenko but not by a huge amount.

In pure skills, the smaller man loma has the edge, but Usyk is the better 12 round fighter

Hopkins more skilled than calzaghe, but Joe is a better fighter over 12 rounds. Now thats not a perfect analogy, but first thought in my head

James Toney being more skilled than anyone, or Floyd too, but there are others like rjj or Ray Leonard who would beat them

But if we are ranking pure skill? Loma edges it still, but usyk is a better fighter

 

Loma. But Usyk is more accomplished. Though Loma should be undisputed too.

Usyk surpassed Loma a long time ago frankly. Usyk is the greatest boxer to ever come out of Ukraine and it’s not even close for me.

 

It's hard to compare, because Loma being much smaller will automatically be sharper, faster, more crisp etc. For me it's Loma, but it's kind of a "pointless" answer. At Usyk's weight class, what he does is more unique.

 

Loma always had iffy body defense for sure, I guess it's because in the amateurs they don't throw as many body shots. It's like sometimes he doesn't even really expect them.

 

For me it's Usyk simply because he's willing to go into the lions den more and take more risks in close competitive fights to get the W.

My issue with Loma has always been I don't think his overall boxing IQ in professional game is up there with the very best. He's took rounds off at crucial moments in fights for example vs Lopez he fought the fight like a sparring session for half the fight.

Usyk goes through the gears alot better for example in both Fury fights there was moments in those fights that Usyk was in some danger of losing but Usyk goes up a gear and sealed the deal on the scorecards I feel like that is missing from Loma.

 

Ward, the most smoke and mirrors fighter of modern time. Got completely outclassed by Kovalev but like Canelo, got the win for ducking on the willy of big promotion. Headbutted his way to a win over Keasler and rarely left his home town. A blight on boxing.

 

No matter what Usyk does, Loma will always be more skilled, even Usyk knows that. I have never seen a more skilled boxer than Loma.

Usyk is a smarter boxer Id say, Loma has made some questionable tactical decisions in some of his fights but he is maybe the most skilled boxer ever.
