I don't think Cotto needs to fight Canelo. Cotto has aged a lot in the last few years. The Cotto that fought Yuri Foreman would give Canelo a run for his money, but after wars with Mayweather and Trout, those kinds of 12 round fights take their toll. Besides Trout beat Cotto, and decisively on the cards, so it doesn't make sense for him to fight Canelo. It's hard to envision Cotto beating Canelo. I think a more appropriate fight would be Cotto vs Pacquiao II or even Cotto vs Marquez, or someone like Robert Guerrerro if Guerrerro loses to Mayweather. The fans want to see the best possible fights, and winners should face winners. Canelo should fight the winner of Guerrero vs Mayweather. If Mayweather wins, that's the next logical fight. If Guerrerro somehow wins, well then Mayweather will probably demand an immediate rematch since he wouldn't be able to accept the fact that he lost. :good
Not much for him to do unless he wants to unify with Smith like you said. He could jump up and challenge JCC Jr in a Mexican mega-fight, but I think that JCC is just a wee bit too big for him. Otherwise all he can really do is just wait and try for the winner of Mayweather/Guerrero.
