Just seen this on the Sky Sports website. what do you think of this corner? i personally think he needs to take on a more establised trainer to further his career, as i agree with people on here who say he's not the finished article by a long way. But he has definatley got the potential and had me jumping up and down in my living room on sat night!

    What Glen McCrory said:

    Nathan Clevery:

THE VERDICT: I was impressed by the way he got past Karo Murat, but it wouldn't have been the way I'd have chosen, that's for sure. You have to admire the fact that Nathan had the belief to keep doing what he was doing and the stamina and energy levels to see him off the end. But I am concerned about his corner; much as I have nothing against his dad, I do think that perhaps now he needs to get someone new in because it was a little bit amateurish. If he is going to go on and be a world champion and go on and dominate at light-heavy, he will come across plenty of people like Murat, and he will need someone in his corner who can really come up with an alternative gameplan if things aren't going his way. The kid might be good enough to do it with his dad there, I suppose, but that is just my opinion. On Saturday he was all about machismo and it was great to watch because he does have fast hands and great fitness. You have to say he's destined for bigger and better things.

NEXT MOVE: He's clearly world-class, but I just feel it might be time for them to be a little more careful with Cleverly. I don't think he's the full package quite yet, or ready to go in with the big, big names; he still has plenty to learn and can do that at European level. People will mention Tarvoris Cloud, Jean Pascal and Jurgen Brähmer, the WBO champ, but I wouldn't throw him in with there just yet. He will win a world title one day, just not right away.

and this is what is Dad said in the comments section:

    Vince Cleverly says...
In reply to Glen i think the only one to be concerned about his corner his Nathan himself !! If Nathan was not happy i would not be there let me tell you.. We had a game plan and decided not to fight off the jab like the other 22 defeated opponents of Murat.. in those fights Murat was allowed to dictate his pace so we decided on a different angle and nobody can argue with the result ..Nath has got stamina in abundance and we used it to great effect in this fight !!! and we also know that Nath has got one hell of a chin as the sparring with Joe Calzaghe proved !! and we did have a plan b an c but did not need it and as i said i would not be in Nathan''s corner or be his trainer if he thought i couldn''t do the buisness and he will tell you he does not need to go anywhere else!!! and for a 23 year old lightheavy weight in his last 8 fights he cannot be faulted.

    I like Vince,

Why would they want to change to a "Top" American trainer when he is improving in every department in every fight, the tactics for the Murat fight were spot on - you cant make every fight easy.

Instead of calling out for a new coach now that Nathan is moving into top class his Father should be aplauded for getting him there. If it aint broke and all that

Fair point. But i would like to see a couple of things "tweeked" up. like his defence. your right, he got the right result, but i think he was too intent on showing is macho-ism instead of putting on a boxing clinic (which im sure he could have done) like i said above, i loved the fight on saturday but if he's going to go to the next level and stay there, i think they need work on some more things.

Defo, he needs to tweek a few things, i dont think he will box like he did against Murat any time soon though, he clearly had a plan and believed Murat was made for him, he was spot on.

He admitted he is not the finished article after the fight and its comments like this that make me even more positive about the guys future, he is a bright lad with his head screwed on although you would not hink it watching him fight like a lunatic.

Fair enough mate. We all have particular fighters that we have a sentimental fondness for.

I have my reservations, but i hope you're right and he proves to be the real deal. :good

    Very good choice :good

Another solid but beatable fighter, Clev needs one more competitive fight like this before jumping in with top six or so fighters.

He's got time, no need to rush, yet no need to take 'keep busy' fights waiting for a soft belt shot. Braehmer is beatable, but very heavy handed to risk a fighter with little defence and a lack of Elite-level experience IMO.

As you say, to see how Cleverly approaches it differently to Pascal and how well it gets the job done.

Not bad for a division that's meant to be "weak". It's quite worrying the flaws Nathan displayed against Murat when you look at that list.

i was beginning to cringe a bit when i read his dad had responded to mcrory dont like that sort of thing...but fair play to him he explained they had the a gameplan in place they thought would work against muraat which it did and also a plan b.

I was someone who thought he did need to change trainer but think now let them get on with it,it seems to be working just fine.

Cleverly clearly has things to improve on but his development has been phenomenal in the last 2 yrs and I certainly didn't realise he had as much natural ability after following his earlier career. The Calzaghes always said he was the real deal but it was hard to see until his development of late, and it is also worth remembering that Murat was essentially his first fight as a full-time pro. Whether people thinks he loses or wins against various light heavies is an interesting debate. But what I do find strange is, for instance, people saying the likes of Cloud would 'destroy' him. Fair enough if the opinion is that he would lose but I've seen Cloud and I don't see how he would be destroyed by him even if he didn't win. What is for sure is that there are some good competitive fights to be had in the light heavies, especially if some of the 168ers come up too. What will be interesting to see is if he develops tactically as it was definitely decided beforehand that he was going to grind Murat down with workrate, so what seemed reckless was maybe less so in this instance. Time will tell if he has a plan B to go to when required tho.

Slip, Calzaghe displayed some of Cleverley's flaws even when he faced Eubank. Joe could have used the jab-straight combos, then moved around constantly, stepped in with hooks and generally worked at a pace Eubank couldn't keep. But he wanted to overpower Chris so stood inside. A lot of that anticipation was very raw then - and he improved his approach as he got older.

The Joe that demolished Lacy wouldn't have stood inside with Eubank without softening him up first.

I still think the best thing is for an experienced top level coach to help the whole team, I never said anyone should be replaced, I just think Warrens job now is ensure a seamless transition to the top level for the whole team, 'cos it's new ground for them, and having a 'consultant' would be a diligent thing to do.
