Why are American fight attendances so pitiful?

The Hopkins v Dawson farce drew a risible crowd of a whopping 8431 people. :roflatsch

To put it into perspective, a recent English second tier football match between two also-rans of British Sport, Bristol City and Peterborough drew a respectable 13,115 spectators.:deal

And these guys are supposed to be the creme de la creme of US boxing. :rofl

I accept that Mayweather can draw a crowd, but after that there is a total vacuum. This is why American boxers rely on foreign fighters in order to boost their takings. :-verysad

The Hopkins vs. Dawson fight was crap and the Staples Center is a pain in the ass to get to. Also USC (the local American football power) was playing a game down the street.

Beyond that, soccer is the national sport of England, so that is not a fair comparison. Minor league baseball games consistently draw 13k or more in cities all over America.

The Margo vs. Mosely card drew over 22,000 to the same building. We show up to good fights.

 

Boxing is not as popular as it used to be, also the economy is really bad.

 

Conspiracy

 

America has a lot more sport leagues than England. USA has the NFL, NBA, MLB, NCAA (football, basketball, baseball, track and filed etc) NHL and even high school football is huge in certain areas like Florida and Texas

 

over inflated ticket prices are probably to blame I bet a ticket out there is pricier than it would be in england

 

Even a darts match in Europe would destroy those figures, not to mention even say a semi final of a darts match would crush any viewing figures Floyd would get on tv.

 

Instead of a soccer comparison. I'm pretty sure a local British dustup on relatively low profile card would get better attendances than most of these big fights held in America.

Don't want to go down the race/heritage route because this thread might end up with all those idiots in the Hopkins v morales poll thread.... But I know black folk don't really follow their fighters into stadiums like let's say a Kelly Pavlik when he was big. The margarito Mosley fight was a sellout at staples centre, it's biggest ever attendance due to margarito pulling in the Mexican contingent. It's the top black fighters that can't seem to pull in big crowds....except for the mega stars like Tyson and Mayweather, and obviously others who were big in their time.

No but it should be. Just imagine if Phil 'The Power' Taylor took up boxing, you never would have heard of Mike Tyson.

 

Boxing seems to be more of a cultural sport like soccer. You can be American but your parents are from Mexico and a lot of people route for the Mexican over the American boxer but in the UK they usually route for their countrymen no matter what.
