It's an expresion that dates back maybe a hundred years. your either a Bum or The Champ. One in a Million or One of a Million. It's Probably from The Great Depression
I can't believe that no one mentioned Joe Louis and his supposed "bum of the month club" where he had no real good opponents so he chose to fight often & everyone available at the time.
I like Tomato can better myself, i think it became a popular expression back in the 70's with the Rocky movies, Burgess Meredith used that line a few times..
people dont respect what fighters have to go through and the fact that they are putting their lives on the line
i like floyd mayweather and all but what annoys me is when the fanboys of mayweather sit there and say ricky hatton is a bum and gatti is a bum and all of that **** when mayweather is the one ducking all of the fights and rematching de la hoya instead
I think that those fans who call fighters bums never have fought within a ring and do not respect the courage it takes to fight, Hell, even sparring is difficult.
People tend to get emotionally invested in the sport (or any sport , for that matter), and often talk without thinking. If most of these "boxing fans" stepped into the ring with the "bums" they disparage, they would **** themselves before getting bludgeoned half to death. It's easy to criticize from the safety of your own keyboard. There's constructive criticism, and then there is immature name-calling and labelling. I think it is pretty easy to tell the difference.
