Well it's not like GGG ruled the fight out altogether, they said that after Kovalev they want to fight Ward so what's the problem then?

Ward wanted 2 to 3 tune ups.

He was fighting at 175 in his second one, Brand will be his 3rd.

We are in August by the time is 3rd tune up is happening....that's 4 months on from the alleged time Golovkin could have fought him.

Also his second tune up was at 175, now if he had any interest in making the GGG fight after the tune ups he would of stayed at 168. But as you well know he was struggling to make the weight. That's why his last 2 fights have been in the division north.

If he wanted to really push for the fight he could of stayed at 168, reasserted his dominance and HBO could have put Golovkin in a corner to make the fight.

there is a vid of ward when he was announcing his deal with rock saying

before a big fight he would need a couple of tune ups to get back to the grove it was only fair was his words

so this proves he was never really ready to fight GGG straight away

Of course he wasn't, if he really wanted the fight he would have stayed at 168, beat someone like DeGale and most likely the fight would be on the cards.

Smith wasn't a tuneup, more like a stay busy. The kovalev deal wasn't in place yet.

Ward probably couldn't even make 168 that's why he wanted the fight with GGG so soon.

Golovkin vs Ward was never in play, and is even less likely now. Move on.

Maybe if ward takes his knockout loss he can move back down and maybe the fight will happen
