Why do "boxing fans" discredit the sport and the fighters so often?

I guess this isn't exclusive to "fans" - I see boxing media doing the same thing pretty often, whether it's a questionable ranking by a sanctioning body, the legitimacy of a certain title, a fighter's opposition, style or talent. I just don't understand it. Personally, nothing makes me happier as a boxing fan than watching a guy win his first world title. The next day he'll be slagged off as a paper champion in articles on every boxing website in existence. It's disgusting to me and very disrespectful.

To most of these fighters, boxing is their lives. This is a sport that requires an extreme dedication to get to the top level. Boxers sacrifice like no other athletes in the world. Who the hell are we to call the proudest moment in a man's life meaningless?

How can anyone criticize Floyd Mayweather's resume? Who else could've fought the same guys that he's fought and came out 41-0?

Who could've come from 130 to 147 and beaten the same guys Pacquiao has beaten in the past few years, much less while barely losing a round?


I think observers of boxing are becoming obscenely critical and even cynical to a point. It's time we just sit back and appreciate the sport we claim to love.

It all comes down to who the media and fans like or dislike....

 

I don't particularly like when "boxing" fans discredit "boxers." Ward is a good example.

 

For whatever reason, since the inception of HBO and mandatory bouts becoming nothing but a promo tool to get better fights. It seems the sport is inundated with non-boxing people. Or, what they call,"business of boxing people"! These people know or care very little about the individual fighters unless there being represented by an affiliate that's on their radar for either promo or advertising purposes. Often a great fighter can get lost in the mix behind the actual even or the social engineering that occurs prior to a bout. I think these are all some of the determining factors that leave the sport in such disaray when it comes to the deserving athletes in the sport. Also this ideology of what's an entertaining fight to someone who knows absolutely nothing about the sport(*******s). These things all coupled with the fact that 90% of the naysayers have never stepped in the squared circle on any level. No experience leads to a lack of knowledge which permiates the misconceptions that lead to the tkt buyer or PPV buyer being less informed about the sport than any other time in boxing history.

 

I've often stated that the boxing media is boxing's worst enemy, and that boxing fans are it's second worst enemy. Instead of building the sport up both groups constantly work to tear it down.

There does not seem to be any way of changing this. I once made a thread that ask people to make a commitment to change their ways. I got a lot of blah, blah, blah, but no real commitments. Many of the posts made it seem like folks didn't even understand what I was talking about.

 

How can anyone criticize Floyd's resume? Have you been living under a rock all these years? atsch

For one, Floyd:
1. Ducked Casa, Cotto, Margarito, and Pacquiao.
2. Fought boringly.
3. Never thought about giving back to the fans by making big fights and fighting spectacular.
4. Has slandered other boxers, like Pacquiao.
5. Too many to mention.

 

for every good game and brave man in boxing every now and then, you get an Andre Dirrell. Say what you want, but its hard to defend this guys behavior in the Super 6 tournament.

 

You're exactly the kind of fan I'm talking about. Who has won their first 41 fights (or more) in the history of boxing against tougher competition than Floyd? I'll wait.

 

I'd love to see you start some threads unrelated to Pac or Floyd.

 

Boxing is the ONLY pro sport in the world where the best dont have to face the best. In this day and age, boxers pick and choose who they want to fight.

MMA haters can crap on UFC all they want. Fact is, either the fighters step up and take on who they're suppose to or get stripped and get dropped. Unlike in boxing, UFC/MMA fans are some happy as fans who get the fights they want and the fights that are suppose to happen!
