Why do Marciano fans attempt to downplay Liston & Foreman?

That reminds me of an experience I had about three years ago. I was talking to this homeless guy who was walking the same direction I was after I'd given him a couple bucks and said he was former pro boxer who fought in Ali's era. This seemed plausible, as he looked to be easily over 200 pounds and was quite muscular despite being about seventy years old.
I asked him his name, but as his lispy, raspy speech was extremely difficult to understand (his voice was kind of like a cross between Miles Davis and Marlon Brando in their later years) I had to ask him to repeat his name three times before pretending to have gotten it out of politeness. We shook hands and parted ways at the next intersection, without me ever having clearly heard his name.
Come to think of it, I'm going to copy and paste this in its own thread and see if anyone knows who this guy might have been.

 

That’s great! These guys are really out there. The journeymen are the best material you can get for a great story.

I’ve known some journeymen who had some interesting story’s. Lost to guys who became champions. Worked on the doors in bars, drove taxis and laboured on building sites. And only half the jokes they tell are boxing stories. Most of the funny stuff that they talk about happened outside the ring. To me, these guys are more interesting than champions.

Alan Minter once told me he lost to a guy in a tournament who beat him and John conteh on the same day. The guy never turned pro and he beat two pro champions on one day! What ever he did with his life after that point nobody knew.

So because Bummy Davis was critical of Foreman and also happened to be a Marciano fan, you reached ...this conclusion...ugh.

 

I don’t think Bummy needed an excuse. I can’t talk for every instance but if bummy believed folks overlook one thing like Quarry not getting a crack at Foreman he does not need an agenda to remind people does he?

If he felt the majority were so sold on Foreman smashing every fighter but Ali to smithereens what’s wrong with reminding people that he remembered a time when Quarry was bypassed? He’s not saying “this means he loses to Marciano here is the proof”. I am not seeing it.

Isn’t he just suggesting, let’s not carried away? Here is a fight that could or should have happened, it made more sense than Jose Roman.

 

You’ve made at least one thread that was basically a diatribe against Rocky. I found it when I was looking for the aforementioned thread I mentioned. But it was from 2014, so I’ll ignore it!

Just to clarify.

I was saying that McVey himself has posted since 2006, so he has undoubtedly encountered some of the more unreasonable Marciano critics.

 

My argument was it takes more than size to beat Marciano, and merely being bigger than him doesn't guarantee victory. Their are 2 extremes when it comes to Rocky. One that he would've beaten every man who'd ever lived. The other? He loses to anyone above 200 pounds. The truth most likely lies somewhere in between.
