Why do most fighters usually only fight 2-3 times a year?

It's not just fighting, it's also going through a long and exhausting camp. How many times did Ray Robinson go through a 2 months camp in his career? The sparring sessions modern champs go through are harder than those cans SRR was beating in official fights.

The fact that SRR and LaMotta could box twice in the same month tells you that they both weren't properly prepared for those fights because they didn't have a camp. Modern fighters are prepared for weeks to peak at the night of the fight. Just another reason why modern boxing is much better, fighters are prepared to fight at their optimal level.

What modern champs. And who are these sparring partners that are better than a Jake LaMotta.. Name them?

So lengthy camps is is what wins fights these days? Would Saunders coming off a 6 week camp automatically beat a two week prepared Ray Robinson?

What fighter today is a level above Ray Robinson?

Every training camp takes a toll. You should go watch a boxer work out sometime, or better yet do it yourself.

most title fights take over a month to even arrange the fight. then the training camps are taking longer than 2 months now. so it all adds up to a long time between bouts. :?

Only two months? Why not take two years and do it right? These guys all look dangerously out of shape.

Didn't Greb fight like 45 times one year, and 39 times another year? Is there someone who's done more? What's the most the others you mentioned each had in a year?

Reggie Strickland was doing the forty fights a year thing in the nineties but he only had a 1/5 win record.

Oh, here we go. Hhascup came up with this on another forum

    58…Ted “Kid” Lewis……………1911
    58…Len Wickwar…………….…1934
    53…Joe Grim……………………1902
    51…Len Wickwar……….………1935
    50…Len Wickwar………….……1932
    49…Len Wickwar………….……1933
    48…Len Wickwar………….……1936
    46…John “Unk” Russell……...…1905
    44…Len Wickwar…………….…1930
    44…Harry Greb…………………1919
    43…Young Erne…………………1902
    42…Young Griffo………….……1890
    41…Len Wickwar………….……1931
    40…Len Wickwar………….……1937

Another dude on boxrec says Jack Marks fought 75 people in 1911.

Looking at Hhascup's list, a few names stick out. Joe Grim, I sort of figured he'd be in there. He was known as the worst boxer ever. He would just let people hit him because he couldn't be knocked out, real freak of nature. Basically, he was doing for real what Homer Simpson did in that one episode of the cartoon.

But Ted Lewis,Young Griffo, and Harry Greb are supposed to be three of the best fighters ever. You'll find good names among the dozens they fought each year. Ted Lewis fought Jack Britton another great fighter twenty times in six years.

Well, arranging a fight can be very dangerous, and their health comes first.

Because excessive amounts of training camps could be physically damaging in the long run. Training camps for tough fights aren't similar to those for easy fights.

Thanks for sharing. I had forgotten all about Wickwar - I remember reading something about him somewhere, and as soon as I saw his name it rang a bell.

    Guess I was way off.
