Its clear he doesnt have 1 punch KO power but who does nowadays? IT seems almost in every thread that comes up abotu him his punching power is brought up(actually down). He does work off volume but he manages to hurt his opponents more than enough. -I have never seen Hopkins get worked over so bad and basically buying time so he doesnt get KOd until he fought Calzaghe. -Also Calzaghe was making Jones look amateurish and slow. People say its because he is old but look at what Jones did to LAcy. Jones still would beat quite a bit of fighters in his weight class. If not all. -Then the real reason i think Calzaghe can punch. The Kessler fight. YOu can say Hopkins and Jones were old but Kessler was in his prime and not to mention he has a very sturdy chin. Calzaghe hurt Kessler. Even Kessler admitted it. With a body shot! So why does he got so much **** about his power? Is it just because he suffers this criticism because he is foreign and not an American fighter???
Calzaghe wasn't KO'ing Hopkins. Hopkins was tired; that's why he pulled out all the stops to slow the fight down. Jones was and is still washed-up. Lacy has never been a good yardstick. Jones' reflexes, agility and legs have all disappeared. Kessler was never seriously hurt by Calzaghe. His power isn't bad; it's just average by the way he throws his punches. He throws flurries rather than sitting down and following through on every shot.
Because of the hand problems he'd had over the years, towards the tail end of his career he started to hit more with the inside of the glove, resulting in a lot more of his fights going the distance and Joe having to win them on workrate. PS: There was also a big step up in competition, which lowered his KO ratio dramatically.
No, plain and simple he's not a puncher. Its so irritating when the Jones fight is brought up. Look what JERMAINE TAYLOR did to Lacy. Jones is a ****ing shell of himself after the the Ruiz fight. It was evident in the first Tarver fight.
look what jones did to lacy that doesnt prove anything other than lacy is shot to pieces, absolutely gone!
ANd still mostly haters saying look at the opposition. If he had no punch then why do his opponents not walk through his punches to land their own??
once his hands turned to shite, he couldnt maintain hard hitting, he could put in the odd hard shot, but flurrying was a lot easyer on the hands... hes never been short of power
I'd say its cuz he used to have good power for a SMW but too many broken hands. He took a lot off his punches the last few years and had to do it with phenomenal speed and work rate.
Towards the end of his career it was obvious that he deliberately took a lot off of his punches to spare his hands, which is understandable and everything, but it did make a lot of people forget that he wasn't always like that.
If Calzaghe had a punch he would have stopped Jeff Lacy, who he exposed as being one dimensional and gave a thorough beating.
