Why does boxing not have a standardized ring size?

If people only knew...a lot of times the size of the ring is the least of a fighter's worries, he has to find out where the ring boards don't fit together and leave holes that can result in a ankle/leg injury, sometimes it's questionable if the entire ring is going to fall, and lots of times the ropes are too loose because the ring is out of square and out of plumb and the ring posts lean inward. The bottom ropes might be tight and the top ropes are so loose that one fighter could easily push the other through the ropes.

If I remember correctly, Fury didn't like the ring for the Wlad fight and demanded that it be changed just before the fight. Can't recall if he didn't like the ropes or the canvas.

We were putting up a ring for a show one afternoon and somebody put one of the braces in the wrong place, so none of the flooring sheets would fit right. There were 4 or 5 of us trying to figure out how to make them fit and we struggled with it. There was another guy that was doing a serious taste test at the beer concession, and, after a while, he walks over and asks how come one of the braces is close to the other one. Very embarrassing.

Runners want bigger rings. Warriors want smaller rings.

If you mandate ring size by weight division you are going to cut the number of shows put on each year by quite a bit. How often does a card have every match within one or two divisions of each other? They can't change ring size mid show. It is hard enough for a lot of guys to get fights now.

its part of matchmaking and evening of odds. a negotiating point. size, rigidity, tension, etc... all affect your ability to do certain things in a ring. things that are more advantageous to some fighters than others. even if you could get all orgs and all states to agree to one size, one type of material, and one building blueprint, you still wouldnt get identical rings. so it becomes a point of contention between fighters.

You could make a big ring then shrink it by moving the ropes in, not sure if anyone's ring does that currently.

    Because it doesn’t really matter.

Same as the gloves. Of course, picking your own ref and judges has to have an even greater effect on the outcome of a fight.

    Or an octagon.

If you can move the ropes, why not make them smaller every round? Or better yet, during the round.
