Puerto Ricans are Americans. Thats great that wikipedia and boxrec have his country listed as Puerto Rico but that doesnt change Puerto Rico into a country.

Brits are just being bitter because they are becoming more and more irrelevant in boxing.

I have no problem with boxers moving to Canada to further their career, although I find it a rather strange decision when there are three bigger boxing countries.

What I find annoying is the way Canadians act like these guys are 'their' fighters. Lol, at somebody trying to justify it with "Germany does it as well." Yes, they do, and I was going to mention them in the thread too but I thought I would stick to offending just one nation today. Plus, the Germans have their own fighters too and the only delusional fanboy I can think on ESB is Bremen.

Somebody also mentioned Rios, Arreola and Donaire. The first two are American and, as for Donaire, I've never seen Americans on here trying to pretend he isn't Filipino.

I was making a point about nationality, America is a country built up of immigrants and you get some dumb ****s talking about nationality

It doesnt matter where your from as far as im concerned, its what you do in the ring that matters

Canada is a better place to live than some of the countries they came from. And it also offers an opportunity to make good money if you're good or an exciting fighter. Being branded part-Canadien is a fair trade-off. It's a case of exploitation on both sides. In Lennox Lewis's case, he learnt to box in Canada and when he became big decided to pretend he was English to attract more fans in the bigger UK market.

What should we do ? don't give a damn about them ? just a comparaison with Hockey , if your a fans of the Canadians you won't shut up when a foreigner player scored because he isn't Canadian :nono or get all exited when a Canadian score a goal agains't us. Like it or not Montréal is becoming a boxing town and HBO and Showtime already said they like it here they love the fanatism of the fans here and this was possible because of foreigner boxer that came here. Canada have 30 millions population and boxing must be the 10th most popular sports behind curling , damn it! of course we don't have many great Canadian born boxers , should i watch ****ing curling because we own the sports ( i do watch some :lol:) and forget about boxing ?

Canada has been build by immigrants and we are one of the most welcoming country in the world because of our origins , we have 2 languages so it's easier for more foreigners to come here . This is why we have less difficulty identified to foreigners that do well by leaving here. I'm glad to be a Canadian and a open minded one compare to a lot's of other country!

You can be sure Lewis would still be Canadian if the boxing scene in the 90's was what it is today.

Nothing about being bitter personally, I think we've had a decent enough year and am really enjoying the domestic scene at the moment.

Just Puerto Ricans aren't really Americans. You'll never see Cotto being described as an 'American boxer' in the media. It's always 'the puerto rican boxer'. You'll never see him go into the ring with stars and stripes on his shorts.

His nationality is Puerto Rican. To say he's a yank is just weird and I don't really see your motivation, you've got plenty of actual Americans to choose from.

English-born, Canadian-made, Jaimacan by descent. I could've phrased it better than "pretend", even if I do believe he used his British roots mainly for the interests of his pro career. When it comes to his boxing though Canada would have the bigger claim.
