Floyd Mayweather is a 6 time world champion in 5 different weight classes. Five of these titles have been with the WBC. The only one that wasn't is the IBF trinket he won from Zab Judah in 2006. If Judah hadn't shockingly lost his WBC title to Carlos Baldomir, the IBF title may not have even been on the line against Floyd. Against Shane Mosley, Floyd refused to pay the sanctioning fee for Mosley's WBA title, repeatedly telling us "Belts don't do nothing but collect dust." Now he's fighting Victor Ortiz, Floyd seems happy to pay for the opportunity to win the WBC version of the welterweight crown. What is Floyd's deal with the WBC? Does Don Jose Sulaiman think he's Mexican?
Why does Floyd bling out his 3rd generation ipod with 50k worth of diamonds? I think he's just compulsively random at times lol
Who knows? Maybe he only fights for the WBC belt because it's the most recognisable to casuals, so they'll think he's been fighting the best, when he really hasn't. He's all about playing on perception and hype, atleast since he become "Money".
This is the most logical reason. It's certainly lost a lot of prestige in recent years though. I think he's got some kind of deal with them personally.
WBC is the most prestigious although it is going downhill. WBA is a joke and I wish more people would refuse to pay the santioning fees and hopefully it will disappear!
The WBA has had three champions in one division - "Super Champion", "Regular Champion", and "Interim Champion". they have also had an "Interim Champion In Recess". Following this logic, they could have an interim regular, interim regular in recess, interim super and interim super in recess too. They could potentially by their rules have EIGHT champions in a division! But that is for another thread.
Even so, he has gone on record that he doesn't care about the belts, any belts. Now, he wants the WBC belt. Go figure.
I wasn't aware that he did, but I can only imagine it's because he understands the importance of controlling urban growth. The purpose of a green belt is: - To check the unrestricted sprawl of large built-up areas - To prevent neighbouring towns from merging into one another - To assist in safeguarding the countryside from encroachment - To preserve the setting and special character of historic towns - To assist in urban regeneration, by encouraging the recycling of derelict and other urban land Floys is an intelligent and consciencious individual. I've no doubt that these issues are of great concern to him
Yet he'd already won the 5 WBC titles in 5 different divisions before the Money persona came about, so your point falls down there.
