When I made this thread I had not yet seen that Joe had officially announced his retirement. I guess I just want to see someone push Calzaghe. I want to know how good he really is. I would be pulling for Calzaghe against Dawson as I believe Joe would be the underdog, although it has potential to be a very competitive fight. I am a boxing fan and not a fan or a hater of any particular fighter. I want to see the best matchups possible and I think Joe still has his best fights in him, as far as entertainment value goes. I think it is the boxing fans' loss that Joe is retiring but that is certainly his decision and no one can really fault him for it. I just hate for him to claim that there is no good enough fighter at his weight class when the truth is there is not a POPULAR enough fighter in his weight class. I have always hated the fact that boxing is the only sport where being good and prime actually hurts your chances of having success and being older and having lost some ability increases those chances.
I'm a big fan of Dawson and I take offense that you say I'm not. Just because I criticize some of his some decisions, does not mean I am not a fan. As for Dawson chasing Calzaghe, it's more about Dawson constantly calling his name out, he called out Hopkins, and Williams too. He sometimes needs to fight who's in front of him (mandatories) or the ones available, than go after the big fights.
Chad would K.O Joe, If old timers can put Joe on his bum in the 1st, Chad would not let Joe off the hook.
1. He's retired 2. He's un-proven 3. He's not a big enough global name at this stage in Calzaghe's career 4. He wont bring in a big purse Why not ask the same questions about Hopkins and Dawson?
if an old timer in GJ could give chad all he could handle and then some more then joe would give him hell blah blah blah....... it's a shame the fight never came to fruition, it would have been a showstopper. can't blame joe for retiring though, when the fires not there anymore it's best just to call it a day. because he's a skillful, young, unbeaten two time champ with a string of good wins. good enough for ya?
Dawson woul dbe a nice name to add, but not the type of oponent which would change the minds of the haters, if proving the many Lacy fans wrong, the many Kessler fans wrong and the many Hopkins fans wrong didnt do it, then I doubt the half a dozen Dawson fans will make too much difference... Calzaghe will be taking a close look at the Froch - Taylor winner though, im sure of it.
So was lacey, i bought the boxing game for the Xbox360 and his stats were better than all the legends, Lacy was the next big thing and he was embaressed, and like every other fighter who fought Calzaghe they have been humbled, Dawson is just 1 too late for Calzaghe now, the champ doesnt want to fight anymore.
chad dawson has wins over antonio tarver, adamek and glen johnson. jeff lacy had wins over syd vanderpool, robin reid and scott pemberton. chad dawson is clearly the more gifted and able fighter, you only have to watch the tapes for this to be clear. he is also a hell of a lot more proven than jeff was going into his bout with joe. for whatever reason though jeff was twice as hyped as chad has ever been.
jeff lacy had nothing really of note on his resume apart from shot to **** ex champs and contenders. he was not even remotely as proven in the ring as chad is. seriously, sit down, compare some dawson and lacy fights then tell me with a straight face that lacy is even on dawson's planet.
I would have liked Joe to face Dawson, not least because its winnable. I rate Dawson as a very good fighter and I'm impressed by the resume he's building up. It would have been a valuable win on his LHW ledger. Why people think Joe had nothing to gain out of it I'm not sure.
dawson has been the latest name put forward most frequently as the man to end the supposed calzaghe hype. i think it would be the last nail in the coffin for many of the non-believers on the other side of the waters if calzaghe were to deliver the W over chad as he is clearly a superior fighter to jeff lacy. joe will always have hardcore haters no matter what, but so will all fighters. people who count know what a win over dawson would do to joe's standing.
i wonldn't compare Dawson with Lacy i am just making a point, Calzaghe has fought the up and coming fighters like Lacy and Kessler (Dawson), he's fought the legends RJJ, Bhop and Eubank. Dawson is just another name to Calzaghe and he thought to himself 'i can't get motivated to do this, i want another legend like Bhop or RJJ or i will retire.' personally i think Calzaghe should have fought Valuev, i think he had a good chance of beating him and if he lost he would have lost to the HW champ of the world.
