GGG is awesome and yes his skills are subtle and many folks consider the speed and craft of say the Lomas and Floyd's of the world as more impressive and that's not necessarily true. I'll play devils advocate here and say while I've been impressed by GGG he has yet to fight a boxer that makes place him in a category that leads down the path of an all time great.

He doesn't impress you because he's really not that impressive. there's nothing he's doing, given his level of comp that other guys couldn't do...i'll give you a few examples. When ggg fought curtis stevens it was seen as a big step up. ggg dominated stevens, even though stevens had his moments. it was considered a high quality win. then along comes hasssan ndam a few fights later and beats up stevens in similarly dominant fashion. that was the first sign that ggg was simply building up his hype on low-level opposition.

Then came daniel geale....so, ggg stops geale in 3 and his nutriders rave about this huge win and talk about "geale would beat cotto and canelo, etc." but two fights later geale gets destroyed in even MORE spectacular fashion in 4 rounds by cotto. Proving what anybody who is objective knows about ggg's comp.

Next came rubio...ggg blows rubio out in two. clearly rubio is a shell of his former self. but the ggg fanboys sing his praises...."rubio was great until ggg got to him"....then a few months later, the LESS talented of he dirrell brothers, a guy with little power and unimpressive skillset who I in fact consider to be a level above clubfighter status, hands rubio an obscene beating for 12 rounds. If direll could punch, rubio woulda been gone by the second round.

Other than that, its been wins over monroe and wade, two straight up clubfighters and a decent win over lemieux, a guy who had been ko'd by rubio...in the lemieux fight, ggg abandoned his power-punching style and chose to box carefully behind a jab .

So, no, your impressions aren't wrong...he's not all that. just watch the murray and ouma fights...those guys were barely legit and gave him competitive fights.

my feeling is the first time he goes up against a true top level guy, we'll see ggg struggle and get exposed for the good-but-not-great talent he truly is.

must be a fan of pot shotting, lots of hugging, and running boxing. pro boxing is really different from amateur boxing with intent to inflict damage as a dominating win rather than scoring points to win.

Agreed. Now that Ward has moved up I can see him running through most of 168 as well though (the division just ain't that great), but it'll be step in the right direction. Would like to see him fight Degale, Dre Dirrell - even the diminished version of today, maybe Jack, FWIW I like the Zurdo fight too. Either way I would like to see just how good GGG is.

The very fact that he's a country mile ahead of the rest of his own division is pretty impressive to me though - most fighters would get a lot of credit for that. I guess the TS has higher standards than me.

Of all the things I find perplexing on Boxing Forums and there are many, its this highly inaccurate perception that bothers me the most. That somehow fighters from Eastern Europe are all lead footed lumbering Frankenstein's Monsters who plod headlong into the fists of far more capable highly skilled fighters and their only saving grace is their immense power that they overwhelm their opponent with usually leading to the inevitable stoppage, which is frequently used to discredit them, because after all, "they didn't outbox anybody, they relied on their power." This couldn't be further from the truth, the reality is many of the fighters from Eastern Europe are some of the most skilled high caliber fighters to grace the squared circle in recent memory. There's a fallacy that many people seem to believe, its that only defensively minded fighters are somehow the true sweet scientists of the sport, and that hit and not get hit is of the utmost importance. But that's not the case, offensively minded fighters can be every bit as skilled as the hit and not get hit crowd, its only their detractors that don't seem to recognize these qualities in aggressive destroyer type fighters. Well that makes me wonder how deep their understanding of the sweet science really goes.

Its a common occurrence with many fans they either can't see or refuse to acknowledge the proof that should be very apparent to them if they would just open their eyes and be willing to look. Many come forward fighters have been decried for their perceived lack of skills like Manny Pacquiao, Erik Morales, Joe Calzaghe, Carl Froch, Mike Tyson you get the idea. Seemingly missing their footwork, use of the jab, ability to slip punches in close by bobbing, weaving, blocking and parrying, counters, combinations, accuracy, stance, balance, control of range and distance. All that s*** they've got down to a science a sweet science. They only do it coming forward, which is in some ways more difficult to accomplish than it is constantly retreating.

And guess what? Gennady Golovkin has an overabundance of those skills and is an elite level fighter of the highest order and only someone who doesn't comprehend the sweet science as good as they think they can, can't see this. Here let me explain it to you. Skill wise as an offensive fighter he's more well rounded and complex than most so-called defensive geniuses. Just like many proclaim that fans miss the subtleties of great defensive fighters and therefore "DKSAB" well the same argument can apply to them. Gennady's defense is top tier, his slight subtle head movements just enough to roll with punches or slip them in close, his blocking, his parrying all usually while coming forward is similar to Chocolatito, add in his just stepping out of range when his opponents shots are coming in, the reality is its a hell of a lot harder to hit GGG clean that most seem to think it is. His footwork is as close to brilliant as you can get, he never chases or follows, he's constantly moving laterally with them when his opponent are trying to run, stepping right in their way never allowing them to find an escape route, always staring right into his opponents eyes to further intimidate and discombobulate them, while applying immense pressure and when they go to the right he goes to the right and vice versa they eventually they start feeling like a rat in a cage and feel trapped and become paranoid and confused so they make mistakes that he capitalizes on almost immediately, eventually he gets them right where he wants them, which is either in the corner or along the ropes where he usually ends up stopping them. And I hate to break to all of the people who think slick fighters will be his downfall, he feasts on them with the greatest of ease, even Mayweather would not be able to get away from Triple G his footwork is that amazing. He is the definition of an effective aggressor.

GGG is also a very skilled counter puncher he easily parries his opponents jab with right hand while shooting out his own counter left jab connecting with them as they come in, while they miss him entirely and therefore enhancing the impact of his counter sometimes with devastating effects, also with his left he blocks their rights and shoots out his counter uppercuts and he does this repeatedly and many fans seem to miss this sly technique, and for some reason think he's easy to hit, maybe its their eyes that are deceiving them. He's amazing at setting these traps and often his opponents seem to never catch on either. Then also he's brilliant at the art of shifting which is essentially going either southpaw to orthodox or vice versa, while gaining power by transferring weight on his feet moving in and out at the same time as he's throwing a punch, basically its the ability to sit down on your punches while in close or while inside fighting therefore maximizing the impact of the punch, which he's great at, add to this his amazing accuracy, and his incredibly educated brutal stiff jab which he utilizes with great effectiveness which he uses to set up his even more brutal power punches, his brilliant punch placement, innovative use of angles and punch selection and his general mastery of most types of punches, his brutal twisting knuckle punch hooks to the ribs are horrifying.

Then there are the other intangibles like his seemingly iron chin which is a great asset to possess in spite of the fact he doesn't rely on it as much as people think, since opponents so rarely land flush on him. And of course his most valuable asset which is his immense power which opponents no matter their skill level they can never seem to smother, slip or block enough to fully get away from, his shots always get through their guards of course they're being set up by his tapping decoy hooks and jabs up top of to the body allowing him ease of access to their head and chin when they reflexively try to protect the exposed areas opening the intended target up for a flush shot that does maximum damage. In many ways GGG is a terrorist in the ring his presence, his pressure, his eye contact, his power and his reputation all terrify opponents and often times they've lost the match before they've ever set foot in the ring, because they feel as though they are going on a suicide mission with their chances at victory being near futile. Also the little fact that his instincts and intellect are top notch, he's far more intelligent than many of you all seem to think he is. His ring generalship is immaculate and only truly brilliant fighters can control range and distance with the absolute ease with which GGG does.

He is as complete a fighter as you could possibly find in terms of an offense/defense combination and to the people on this site and many others who seem to think that Canelo Alvarez, Miguel Cotto, Erislandy Lara so on and so forth would box his ears off, well I'm sorry to inform you, but you might be insane or at the very least you don't know **** about boxing, because they do not stand even a slightest of chances against him, he's far more skilled than any of them on every level, no matter what the fanboys may want to believe or try to convince themselves of, its not a reality its only in their dreams. He spent years as an amateur perfecting his style facing every style imaginable having well over 300 matches which adequately prepared him for every type of opponent that is put before him. He's as close to a perfect fighting machine as you can get and the quicker all of his detractors can come to terms with this fact, the easier it'll be able to accept the inevitable losses their favorites will incur, because they will know....that their guy....he never even had a chance.

So underestimate and underrate Gennady Golovkin at your own peril....because we'll be here to say we told you so.

start with lara who ggg has been ducking coming on 2 years now. bj saunders showed me something in the andy lee fight...i give him an even shot to beat ggg or at least make it a long night for him....at the very least could we get an andy lee? i know, i know "ggg would kill andy lee....let him fight tureano johnson or the latest version of dominic wade/willie monroe instead"...well lee would be the best fighter ggg ever faced, and i'd bet money on lee taking ggg out.

I rate Saunders higher than Lee and picked him to win, Saunders nearly killed Lee with his right hook, and he has next to no power, you're insane.

Because his opposition is unimpressive. The guy's team seems in no rush to test GGG. Just recently it's said one of his close friends revealed to Virgil Hunter that GGG was told by his promotional team to NOT fight Andre Ward. Obviously, they want as many non challenges for GGG as humanly possible until they feed him to a great fighter. Just imagine if Floyd Mayweather or Manny Pacquiao (just using recent examples) were told to not move up (or down) in weight and just collect belts in one division. We probably wouldn't be ranking them among the top ATGs. People talk about GGG doing what Hopkins did. If GGG's career resembles anything close to what Hopkins has achieved when he retires, there will be no argument. But, you have to dare to be great to do that. So, don't expect it from GGG, if things continue on this course.
