This argument has been debated for years, and the funny thing is I can't recall any fight in the history of the sport in which one set of fans can't accept the results of the fight and have to resort to rewriting history to justify god only knows what.

I've heard the thumb argument, I've heard the doctor was corrupt, I've heard the dreadlocks argument, I've heard them all, and you know what. They're all pathetic in the extreme. Funny thing is I doubt even Vitali believes half of what his own fans are saying.

Whether or not an era is named after either fighter or not, is a red herring. The FACT, is Lewis won that fight and he won it fairly. The only issue I would take with this fight is I think they should have stopped it earlier than they did.

The fight with Tucker wasn't actually for the vacant belt.
Lewis was already champion, the WBC having decided that in the board room.
Tucker was the mandatory challenger, I believe. And a Don King fighter.

So, I'm not even sure if Lewis was in any position to fight Bowe at all at this point, if he wanted to remain WBC title holder, being in bed with the King/Sulaiman cartel, and tied to the Tucker fight.

Of course, one of Rock Newman's offers to Maloney was for Lewis to REFUSE the WBC belt, and take an interim fight on a Bowe defence undercard , then fight Bowe ... and cut Don King out of the equation completely, and keep the credibility of the linear title in tact. An offer that had its merits.
Of course, Newman might have backtracked on that, who knows ? Maloney didn't give it a chance, and they (Maloney and Lewis) ran into the arms of Don King, who they pretended to despise.
