Why hasn't Sergio Martinez been targeting Bute?

He is a natural 150 pounder fighting the likes of Pavlik at 160.

He should not go up, but down.

But.... Mayweather and Pac fans are both united in hoping he goes up because he is such a serious threat to these two guys.

I don't think we'll ever see a Martinez/Sturm fight. Sturm has a sweet multi-fight TV deal, and he simply can't afford to take a chance on screwing that up.

In my opinion Martinez gets way to much credit for beating Pavlik. The circumstances leading up to that fight were horrendous. Sergio fought a guy who spent his training camp at the Betty Ford Center, and damn near killing himself making weight.

Pavlik has made a couple of attempts to get Martinez to fight at 164-166, but Martinez won't even discuss it. All Kelly wants is for Sergio to do for him the same thing he did for Jermain. Martinez won't risk it. If he were some great P4P champion like people claim he is, he'd take the fight.

 

I don't think Martinez should have to move up to 168 or even a catch weight there. He's a small MW and hit the canvas against Williams and Pavlik, don't think he'd handle the fire power at 168 all that well, so I give him a pass. As for a rematch with Pavlik, why? Pavlik's got no momentum, Sergio would get nothing out of that, not even a mega pay check, and to boot Kelly could beat him. Kelly was winning their fight before he completely gassed out at the start of the 9th.

MW is stacked, but all the major fighters are currently stuck in obscurity. Pirog and Golovkin won't make major tv appearances probably till later this year or early next, til then they won't get recognition as major fighters. Same with Geale, Korobov, N'Jikam, Lee, & Lemieux. I guess Martinez get's another pass for a safe stay busy fight as he waits on these other guys and continues to build himself up as well.

 

What's the deal with Chavez jr facing Manfredo? I thought Martinez had "emeritus" status, and wanted the fight. Now they're talking Chavez/Manfredo. That does not make sense to me.

 

Martinez might never get to fight Chavez. Sulaiman could create a special title for Chavez and force Martinez to fight Rubio. Meantime Chavez can wait for Cotto and Margarito to beat the hell out of each other and then fight each of them (if he can make it 12 rounds with Manfredo). Sulaiman gave an interview saying Rubio's fight with Lemieux doesn't count as a mandaotry eliminator even though that's how it was promoted. El Presidente is like a catholic priest and Chavez & Alvarez are his boys.

I have a feeling that team Chavez expects Manfredo to fit the same mold as Troy Rowland, John Duddy, & Billy Lyle. Lay money on Manfredo by KO and hedge with Chavez by UD.
