There were discussions between the camps about a potential fight in 2001, so of course Jones had heard of him. After Calzaghe beat Veit, Jones's agent was quoted as saying that he and Jones had watched the fight and Jones was interested in dropping down to SMW for a fight. Like I said, neither chased the fight. Too much risk for too little reward for Jones I would have thought. You are wrong about Calzaghe never calling Jones out, he was always talking about him in interviews, though personally I have never placed much stock in that.
The reason Hatton got those megafights was because he had a massive fanbase and couldnt box for ****.
And finally, ding ding ding. The easiest way to land fights against established champions is not to be a dangerous opponent, it is to represent the best risk/reward scenario for them. Hatton brought a lot to the table and was a beatable opponent.
