you cant knock a guy who wanted to unify with chagaev almost as soon as was champ. gave holyfield a shot becuase no one else would and now fights wladamir. for some reason i hope he doesnt lose...but it's a prayer that wont be listened to.
The main problem with the heavyweight division is a lack of competition, it's basically Wlad and everyone else. The other problem is that a lot of the heavyweights are not highly skilled. I mean you expect a lot of them to fight up to there potential, but they don't. For example Chagaev being called the "white mike tyson" you expect him to have power and skills close to Tyson's level, but it's nowhere near that. He just looks decent, hell he barley beat John Ruiz in 12 rounds. Then there is Ibragrimov who is just a boxer with good skills, but not good enough to get a win against Ray Austin. The point is a lot of the HW boxers don't look skilled compared to the lower weights.
Big guys today are spoiled right from birth in the states. And the big guys who aren't born in the states come to the states and are spoiled within 5 years time. Nothing is harder in life than maintaining motivation. Only the greats make it happen, and there hasn't been anyone really that great since Lewis and Holyfield. Waldo seems to be on his way though.
Biggest problem is that the top guys are not fighting each other, last few years has been one big joke.
It sucks because of the lack of talent available at HW. It sucks because the best fighters don't fight each other. I sucks because the Organizations, the promoters, the fighters, are just too focused on the money.
1. I like the Heavyweight division 2. Without Wlad, I probably wouldn't like it. 3. Ibragimov has a lot of balls.
I agree on all points. Like I said earlier in this thread, the top guys need to fight the top guys - period. Don King is bad for boxing. He got Austin an undeserved shot at Wlad and look how that fight turned out. Ray was seriously outclassed. Does anyone remember Byrd vs. TOS? That's the type of fights we can look forward to if King controls any of the belts. Currently he only holds a half interest in the WBC interim champion Sam Peter.
