Personally, I feel Clottey is overrated. The two biggest things he is known for is being competative but losing to Margo and beating Judah when Zab couldnt continue because of a cut, but was arguably losing when the fight was stopped (before the Cotto fight of course). He has a good chin, but he should have a good chin seeing as how he comes into the ring for WW fights at and sometimes above the SMW limit. Remember, when he fought Corrales, a former LW, he walked into the ring at 170...and vs Judah, he did the same. Other fights, like vs Cotto, he came in the high 60's. No idea how any human being rehydrates like that...but damn if it should be outlawed. I think he is a good fighter, but would lose to every top WW/JMW out there (though I think a Berto fight would be intriguing, with Berto's chin issues). Mosely, Cotto, Pac, Floyd, Williams, Martinez, etc...all win CLEARLY. He is a good fighter who gets mentioned too often in "great fighter" conversations. To me, that is overrated. Not to mention that he says he is being ducked by every big fighter out there...then has the chance to fight Martinez for a title and turns it down for a fight with Quintana for nothing...then when that fight fizzles, he gets the chance to fight Williams and turns that down as well. Doesnt help his status any when he calls everyone out, then bows out when he gets the chance to fight them.
What is underrated of him? In his big fights, he always finds way to lose. No matter how winnable is the situation.
I'll tell you exactly why. Signature win = ... I've long supported Clottey, too (narrowly scored him winning over Margarito despite giving away the late rounds). He's under the radar for a reason though. He has yet to convincingly win a career-defining one on the big stage. Diego was too small and shot to count, and Judah kept it too close and there's the anticlimactic ending.
He's not underrated. He's a prety good fighter at 147, but he's not a special, elite caliber opponent. If he were he would've won the two biggest fights of his life against Cotto and Margarito, but something always holds him back from making that final push and actually beating the very best. Clottey = Damn good.... but not great
