bull**** he was the only man to knock Clottey down and he fought the whole fight with a huge cut on his head, without it he probably would have done better against Clottey.
Getting a cut doesn't make you an all time great. edit- I misunderstood what you were objecting to. I had Cotto winning actually, but LOTS of people thought Clottey deserved the win.
You just answered a question I didn't ask, and didn't answer the one I did ask. Who since then has claimed Cotto is the guy to beat Mayweather? People were saying that in 2006 and 2007...but not so much today, or at all recently. Whether or not people believe there was something to the hand wraps, the loss to Margarito broke Cotto's aura of invincibility. There have been no serious claims trumpeted on his behalf to being the Mayweather antidote in a few years now. Again I ask - who exactly is overrating Cotto?
i dont know how highly i rate him but his undefeated streak at 140 and 147 was great he beat so many good and tough fighters and he has only lost to tow great fighters who fought career day kind of fights and in losing he fought bravely the guy has not been the same post margo and what he had left pacman kinda took out of him the margo 2 fight is a pride thing more than a resume builder or hof criteria he has 3 belts in 2 weights despite 2 being paper great fighter just not a great
Seriously. The "Cotto is a surefire ATG/would beat Floyd" fad died down in the Bush administration (and when approval ratings were still somewhat high!)
He never will be an ATG.He's just not near that level. There just isn't enough out there for him to beat anyway as he's already been stopped by Manny and, unless Mayweather becomes shot fast,as he's around 34,Miguel certainly is not going to beat him either.
What would you guys say if Cotto manages to beat Tony in a rematch and then fought and beat Martinez, a fight which could be made, would that be enough to be a great?
Good way of putting it brother I think Cotto's wins at 140 get overlooked by some though, he may not have fought Hatton or Tszyu there but nonetheless he built up a nice set of names at 140 pounds like Randall Bailey,Lovemore Ndou,Ricardo Torres,Demarcus Corley,Paulie Malignaggi,Carlos Maussa,Victoriano Sosa.........Four of the fellas I named would eventually become world titlist after they lost to Cotto.
sure i mean hed avenge that first loss that took away his image i mean marg is passed it and everything and it would be like if in 94 tyson beat up douglas but beating marg has some credibility and beating sergio is a huge deal 4 titles in 4 and this one being the real title at 160 is a huge win
Yes because that would mean he is a better class of fighter than he has demonstrated so far if he was able to do that.
I've always maintained Cotto (even though he was green) would have outfought Hatton at 140. Old Tszyu (the same one Hatton met) would have been dangerous, but beatable. His whiskers weren't great down there, but oh what heart. :good He'd hit you back with a furious vengeance when he did get hurt, too.
no greats at 140 but he beat some tough and guys and some decorated guys plus avenged am loss to pinto and beat am stand out abdulaev
