Stevens is a puncher who is on a small streak that has many people excited. He also talks a good game, so there is some interest in seeing him walk the talk. An overwhelming number of people on this forum felt GGG was not fighting any punchers. Well, here is one. But, the fight was made as 1) a stay bust fight 2) in Steven's hometown which is 3) IN ONE OF THE LARGEST MEDIA OUTLETS IN THE WORLD. The plan is that if GGG can dismantle Stevens in graphic fashion under the eye of the media and money makers, then perhaps others will be forced to the table..
That is the fight fans wanted to see, many of them claiming that Golovkin would not stand a chance against Stevens. The other champions refuse to fight Golovkin. Golovkin said he would go down to 154 and fight Void, but Void refused. Golovkin will fight anyone at 154, 160 and later at 168. Look how long Hopkins fought at 160. Hagler fought at 160 his entire career, nobody complained.....................
I'll preface what I'm about to ask by saying I am a Maravilla fan, but what were GGG's engagements at the time of Murray vs. Martinez?
People don't want to fight him at 160 so HE has to prove himself at a higher weight class? You're an idiot.
Martinez fought Murray April 28th GGG fought Macklin June 29th So GGG was probably at the beginning of his training camp for Macklin when Martinez fought Murray.
He might move up...But imagine what would happen if he move down at 154. Then 154 will become like a Bermuda triangle.
