He fought some very good Old/small fighters. Never faced any of the young up and comers of his era. Some even claimed that retired knowing that the young crop of fighters would be trouble for him. I tend to believe it was the pressure from his family mostly his wife that made him cut his boxing career short. But the rumors were out there.

the guy is so rated cause he was by far the best of his era. Also, he was smaller than most of his opponents and still beat them. aMong other reasons

It also doesn't hurt that he was nearly the prototype for what a swarmer can be based on power, chin, workrate, stamina, and heart. If you were trying to fit as many qualities you'd want in that style of fighter into one person, it'd have been hard to top how many of those Marciano had going for him. He was also deceptively strong- nobody had success bullying him even though he was far from the biggest HW of that time.

Fought the best out of his ****-weak HW era.

Here are some of those "best"

37 years old Joe Louis, who came back from retirement due to money problems. If people don't give Tyson credit for KOing Holmes, or Lewis for beating Holyfield, neither should they give credit to Marciano as well.

39 years old, former MW and shopworm Archie Moore. Marciano struggled with him. This achievement is by far less impressive than Tyson's 1st round destruction of Michael Spinks.

38 years old, former MW Jersey Joe Walcott, who had 16 losses already when he fought Marciano. Marciano struggled with him.

33 years old Ezzard Charles who had 10 losses already when Marciano fought him. Guess what again - Marciano struggled against him.

Horses ****! Try doing your homework. Rex Layne was an up and coming knockout artist, and the 9 to 5 favourite. There were numerous other contenders, one of whom Marciano deliberately tried to injure and put in the hospital. Punishment for running his mouth. Want to know who it is? Look it up punk.

Marciano, no matter the size of the opponent, always was able to eventually get inside and connect to always win. With Lewis' chin not being granite, Marciano may have been able to catch Lewis. I would put money on Marciano over Lewis, let me tell you. You have to ride the Marciano streak when betting. Marciano was even able to catch the quicker guys too. I think people underestimate how smart he was.

He fought everyone and beat all his mandatories, and this is when there weren't all these different belts, so his mandatories were always the best challengers in the HW at the time. Marciano had some close calls, but he still won them all.

Let me note too, that Marciano started his career KO ing a lot of his opponents, pretty good streak of KOs, very similar to Tyson's streak. Tyson often called Marciano the King, Tyson had that much respect for him, unlike Larry Holmes. Tyson never called anyone else the King.

World Heavyweight Title Eliminator. Marciano put Matthews down for the count with two sharp left hooks.

thats his last 8 fights (taken from Boxrec)...so 7 world title fights. Ok, yeah undefeated - no doubt he is great. I knew that, but I dont think he is that great. Why.....well lets see. Archie Moore was an old way past his best MIDDLEWEIGHT...he made the rock struggle. Ezzard Charles was 2 of his 7 title fights...as was Jersey Joe Wallcott!! So ok 7 world title fight but only 5 different opponents. Look at his weights and the weights of his opponents - they were mostly his size!! Rocks weight is on the left and his opponents on the right. Roland LaStarza? Don Cockell? Yeah they're great fighters - Really well known! Sorry but that dont make me think he's an all time great top 5 off that list of world title wins. If anywhere hes lower towards 9 or 10.

Tyson and Lewis would definately have to be above him. Holmes and Holyfield too....and thats only from the modern era.

You need to go get some tapes and books instead of relying on what you think you can see from boxrec.

Idiot. This goes against him if anything. Is Marciano all that highly rated considering his achievements? I'd say no, quite the opposite. A lot of 'experts 'don't even have in the top 5. Unlike ALI who lost how many times???
