I Forgot when the neck thing happened. I Checked it up and saw that it was in 1991, fair point there. Still, let's not ignore that Duran also bloated up into higher weights and was actually middle aged when he fought them, you could see that Duran was flabbier during most of his Welterweight bouts, let alone higher and as an old man. There is a big difference in abillity from a fat 35 year old than a fat 45 year old, and Duran arguably won that one against Camacho. In the second one, he was literally 50 years old. Don't see how you can blame Duran for losing (Barely) at such an advanced age against a 39 year old. Yeah, those aren't Moore, Pacquiao or Hopkins age defying accomplishments and don't live up to his prime years, I never said otherwise. But they still cement Duran's greatness and prove his longevity.
Roberto Duran did a major disservice to his career. I didn't. I just witnessed it. He's the one who showed up out of shape. He's the one who lost over and over He's the one who quit. If it only happened a couple of times, that's one thing. When it happened for 20 years, longer than the amount of time he was actually really good, it's difficult to dismiss it with a wave of the hand. Lots of great fighters aren't mediocre for the better part of 20 years.
Okay, I legit did not think that I was going to have to come back and clarify this because I thought I was talking amongst just good ol' lads that understand lad talk, analogies that we all get unless we're...you know. Not...like...guys that don't think about stuff like that? Anyway, I'm going to try to do this again so we can all of us get back down to real boxing. So, like, let's say you go...uhhhh...antiquing? And you see some old ish that's going to go with your couch and a lot of your favourite shirts? And so you get like excited. Here is a place you can be happy about using your disposable income that you don't have to use on your kids that will be fashionable and fun for your friends. So, that's the excitement that you might get, as the way that you are. The item in question is an antique Joe Louis clock, let's say. And you've got a very bronzy, brassy kind of looking room for it that it goes with. Let's say that, and try to bring it all back around to fight stuff from your perspective. Now, there's another item at the antique place. It's like the Joe Louis clock but it's not a clock, it doesn't involve Joe Louis, or any fighter, or even any man. It's just a non-clock item. No hands or anything. And it's a weird shade of green you know doesn't match anything in your, like...I don't know what you guys have, like a tea parlor room or something? Anyways, it's ugly AF and yet it's super expensive and other people think it's dope AF. It's rare, it's very high quality, there's just something about it. Like, you don't hate it in a real way, because hate needs to be reserved for people who do like Dahmer stuff but you hate it the way of like you dramatically tell your friends you literally hate it and would scoop out your eyes to keep from looking at it any longer because you guys talk that way all over the top and stuff. Anyways, that other antique, that's like Duran. Great antique, worth lots, but it ain't for you maybe. That's gonna be a lot of people, not just by percentage the people that's in your demographic, you understand? Not that that's not a sizable or significant percentage in and of itself, worthy of dismissal or anything. Anyway, I hope I do not have to come back to this one again but if I do I will try. I will try. It's on my to-do list, Nex, but I'm thinking it might actually bum me out enough that I'll wish I didn't watch it. I saw a clip and that actually took me down several pegs and it was only a few seconds.
Roberto Duran was voted the favorite among boxing fans on this forum; of all boxers. https://www.boxingforum24.com/threa...fan-favorites-survey-results-finished.671118/ That is exactly what I think is the reason. There is an individual, or individuals who hate Roberto Duran, and then the majority seems to hate him. I don’t hate Roberto Duran; a great fighter, a great career.
I think I finally understand. It's the difference between a sponge and a starfish, except for that one can filter the water.
What do I think?? I think you've been living under a rock, experimenting with mushrooms or something. Duran "the most hated"???? If anything, Duran is and has been easily the most idolized and worshipped of and fighter outside of Muhammad Ali...and that includes more than both the Sugar Ray's of history. For your information, the most unpopular, most underrated, misjudged and downright hated fighter here was and is Carlos Monzon. I've never seen a more overrated, fighter ever on this board than Duran. Case in point, in a recent post, Monzon was berated and criticized for how he reacted to being clocked in the 10th round of his '72 rematch with Bennie Briscoe....riding out the round "whilst" keeping an eye on the clock near the end of the round...and in a similarly recent thread, a post was made praising how Duran was able to lift his head an inch or so off the deck after Hearns blasted him...I mean, ridiculous **** like that that...., and how you have the gall to even suggest that Duran, who has continually been worshipped at the altar of the "FabFour" has been "hated" is beyond me. You want "most hated", it would be Monzon, followed closely by Gene Tunney...
Monzon isn't hated because of how he reacted against Bennie Briscoe. Monzon is hated because he murdered his wife. That tends to be a deal breaker for most fans. Like people don't hate Edwin Valero because of how he reacted in a tough fight. They hate him over the "he killed his wife" deal. That's generally frowned upon, in most sports.
Are there any detractors left, though? Mendoza, and maybe someone else, would make a lot out of Duran's past prime losses and also the prime loss to DeJesus, even though that was a short notice non-title fight and twice emphatically avenged, but I haven't seen that kind of stuff for a long time, I think. Not buying that No Mas was Leonard's fault and not Duran's own is about as far as the negative about Duran goes on this board these days, I'd say. Which seems much more balanced than for some other greats. EDIT: Going through this thread, it's clear there's at least one of those old detractors still here. He feels Duran's losses in his 40's counts significantly against him...
