I could be wrong, but I think that only amateur boxing was allowed in China until recently...if pro boxing was allowed a few years ago, then we could have some major stars coming out of that country in a few years... Plus over there, the full contact combat sport of choice is likely to be Sanda / San Shou, which is like shootboxing (punches, kicks, and throwing)... this of course was only based on the couple of holidays I've taken there and the conversations I've had with some of the locals I could be wrong in any of them...
Living in China I also dont really understand it. Of course China is ruled by the communist party, but others than that it is as capitalist as any other contries. Every sunday morning we have (almost) live coverage of any big fight in Vegas or other places for FREE on CCTV 5. It has been that way for years otherwie you hear nothing about Chinese boxing and see no amateur boxing on the TV. Anyway I think it is because of the sport is as new as it is here. Probably there are 100 very talented fighters in hard training somewhere and I would not be surpriced if China was the 3rd. best boxing nation in the Beijing olympics 2008, after Cuba and the USA.
they are now making waves in the asian scene last asian games. they even beat thailand and the philippines in the medal standings. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boxing_at_the_2006_Asian_Games http://english.people.com.cn/200612/14/eng20061214_332397.html
one, too busy with their kung fu stuff. two, too busy making artificially tall people (e.g. yao ming) three, too busy taking advantage of the situation in darfur. four, too busy finding phormaldehyde and lead to put on their products. five, too busy wetting their cardboards to be use as substitute for pork in "siopaos". six, too busy waiting for the next zhangh ziyi movie. i think that sums it up.
Are you serious rofl? Also, karate is rarely practiced in China, it's mainly various styles of kung-fu over there(karate isnt one of them)... I think... Hehe I think Karate is more Japanese, not positive on this stuff though, but im pretty sure.. :hey So pretty much, you are all generalizing asians... Racists.. :rofl
:rofl no offense to our chinese neighbor. they will be a future world power. and we could be their province.
I guess there aren't too many Chinese frequenting this board. Am I the only one that's offended by the overall ignorance and racism. Probably. If such a list was made about African Americans, a lot more people would be calling racist. Karate is indeed Japanese btw.
The communists might explain it for mainland China, but what about Free China? :huh That's still a population of about 23 million that hasn't made its voice heard in boxing terms.
You are right bro. If this thread made fun of the African Americans instead, a lot of people are crying our racism now. But since we are talking about the Chinese people, no problem to make fun of them. That is what you call double standard. Btw, taekwondo is from Korea, and not from China.
I know it's a joke, but just want to point out that Tae Kwon Do is Korean. Martial arts aren't really a competitive sport in China. It's really arts at this point. The main place people learn martial arts in China is training for Beijing Opera. China could be a power in boxing, just like every other sport, if it wanted to be; the country just chooses not to focus its attention on that sport. Also, it's not like most other countries where a kid can just pick up a sport. The government chooses in what sports an athlete will participate. If boxing isn't on the government's radar, they'll never get good at it.
Exactly. I'm suprised that no one else has said anything about it. I'm Chinese and I love boxing; I have plenty of friends who are the same as well. I really hope that when the Beijing Olympics come up, China will land itself within the Top 5 countries. For all the people that are over there, there has to be talent.
