yeah i think 12 rounds are fine.

sometimes i've seen 15 rounders where the action is VERY slow at times where i get the feeling both fighters have a kind of unspoken agreement to pace themselves.

12 rounds also garantees more talent can partipate. i mean i bet a lot of fighters who gassed out after 12 rounds back in the old days would have faired much better today with 3 rounds less.

i mean when you think of it, how many sports which require such brutal results over such a period? boxing is basically skillful assault. out of the ring you'd go to jail for that kind of punishment dealing.

and the fighters do this for 36 minutes! previously it was 45 minutes! i mean, jeez, in other sports like football and such, when an athelete tires after 10/20/30 minutes from kicking a ball around the field, they get replaced with a fresh player. if a footballer gets accidently hit in the jaw in a tackle and is slightly dazed, they rush them off the field.

now in boxing, you could be one step away from serious long term damage at anytime in the fight. and there is no replacements.

you either fight to the end or get ko'ed. quitting in any form is howled down upon by the fans, so the 12 rounders are a bit better for fighers health and the potential talent pool. i mean, not every fighter has a engine like juan diaz or mayweather etc.

imagine all the great fighters we would have missed out on if we kept 15 rounders?

also even if there are no universially accepted studies which prove beyond a shadow of a doubt, that the extra 3 rounds cause the most damage to a fighter, i personally believe in the idea in theory.

i mean, if you take 400 shots over 12 rounds. but take an extra 100 shots over the last 3 rounds, for arguments sake, then that might not seem that much. but over a fighters entire career that is a substantial amount of extra punches they must take. not to mention they have to spar more rounds to be fit for a 15 round fight. that also adds more damage longterm.

and finally, the human body, especially atheletes, are finely tuned machines. but no matter how fit or tough you are, accumilation and exhustion eventually catch up to the best.

taking hard shots in round 1 usually are not as dangerous as when you take them in round 15, when bombs are thrown, and your so tired you can't even cover up properly.

a clean powerful one punch ko is much better health-wise, to a slow breaking down by a ton of punishment. you'd have more chance of a cleaner stoppage in 12 rounds than over 15. not to mention it is more exciting to fans. who wants to watch john ruiz for 15 rounds?

oh and has anyone read about or seen footage of knuckle fighting? they used to fight for 100 plus rounds, but to the modern mindset we'd be bored shitless when they only threw 10 punches a round. and if one fighter got knocked down, they were given something like 15 minutes to recover! so it went forever, yet the pace they set was almost non-existant. they'd literally stand in one spot and feint and parry before throwing a rare punch. imagine if they were told to fight at the intensity of a corrales vs. castillio fight but do it over 100 rounds. they'd run away screaming in horror at the idea lol.

    just my opinion of course.

I agree with you zakman. I still believe Hagler would have beat Leonard had there been 3 more rounds, just to name one fight. In fact I would bet my life on it. :!:

Especially considering every fight is a ****ing PPV now anyway! It doesn't need a smaller timeslot anymore.

And another argument is, "by bringing back 15 round fights, fights won't be as exciting."

Does anyone really think fights like Morales-Barrera would be any different if they were 3 rounds longer, those guys wouldn't give a **** about pacing themselves when they're staring at each other across the ring.

I would bet my life on it that Leonard would have KO'd Hagler if it was 15 rounds. Prove me wrong. :patsch

I agree. I think the motivation was a lot more to do with where the money was at.

I mean, come on, some of the stuff people say is just ridiculous. It is pretty indisputable that if you fight for longer then it increases your chances of being hurt. Of course. Just like if an F1 driver raced for 10 laps more it would theoretically increase their chances of crashing and dying. But to say that specifically after 12 rounds punches do more damage? :patsch WHAT? Complete ****. Not unless you switched gloves after the 12th and stuck horse shoes in them. If you're going to argue that then we might as well push for 4 round fights with head gear.

Yes, it was always a beleif that 12 rounds and the one minute breaks fitted perfectly into a 1 hr TV Timeslot.. Plus a preview and after fight interviews..

The old 15's were very hard on a fighter, they got dehydrated if they were tight at the weight, they got super fatigued which made them very vulnerable to getting hit by hard punches late on and not being able to cope with the pressure .. Its like , a fighter needs to be at his or her peak to cope with the punishment and stress the event puts on them anyhow , but imagine trying to appear to be at your strongest when you had just ran three quarters of a marathon then standing in front of a rated professiona fighter.. Its like russian roulette.. Its horses for courses .. Heavyweights may be able to do the 15 with a slower pace, but imagine the likes of Mosley and Cotto towardsthe end of a 15 rounder.. Its a risky business...

    Very interesting subject though.....

12 rounds are ok... 15 rounders are brutally punishing for fighters only the fittest of the fit would survive... i just believe its bad for a fighters health and this would really affect a fighters longetivity in the sport.

Commercial time, plain and simple. There just wasn't enough time for the sponsors in the 15 round bouts. You'll notice the telecasts are still for the same amount of time, but the bouts are only 12 rounds. What do you think fills the extra time??? You got it! Commercials, commercials, and more commercials. Follow the cash, dudes. Follow the cash! :yep

wrong.the majority of deaths in the ring occurred prior to the 12th round. the simple reason is money, 12 rounds of boxing fits neatly in to a 1 hour time slot.
