Why was Calzaghe's pitty pat style so effective?

He was drastically struggling to make 168 for his last 10 or 12 fights there. You'd see his ribs at weigh-ins bless him.

 

It was more than that. He had speed, and in boxing speed means wins. Simply put. You can have a great style, but if you don't have speed it will not matter. in the long run.

 

Because he could land more leather on you than you could land on him.

 

As an American, I recall seeing only one of Joe Calzaghe's bouts on television, the one with Jeff "Left-Hook" Lacy. It is obvious to me that Calzaghe knew what he was doing in the ring and cruelly exposed Lacy's limitations as a fighter. While Calzaghe may have not been a great puncher, Lacy took a brutal beating in the bout. As a result, I still can't understand why Lacy's corner didn't make a great effort to get the bout stopped in an earlier round.

Calzaghe was a supremely conditioned , fast, cagey, elusive and smart fighter .. I may not rate him as an all time great but he was a hell of a fighter .. and he came out on top .. kudos to him.
