whoa thread revival. i felt that way too. Joe Frazier was a real dude. The only dude who ever talked back to Ali and wasnt afraid of **** "ill go into the jungle and fight a lion with a tooth pick"
George Foreman claims that Frazier told him that Ali's calling him an Uncle Tom hurt the most. He [Frazier] said that now his wife thinks when he's out running, wearing his hood, he's looking through windows. Frazier thought Uncle Tom meant Peeping Tom.
**** Ali...Frazier loaned him money when he needed it...he helped Ali get his boxing license back...**** Ali...
WTF seriously? Frazier was pissed that he thought Ali called him a perv, not knowing it was a race reference at all? You gotta be shitting me! :rofl
Joe Frazier stoled some of Ali`s thunder in the late 60s. Joe was an exciting fighter and people were giving him attention while Ali was in exile. Frazier was making good $ and Ali got jealous. Then they had the biggest fight ever in the history of sports and Joe Frazier beat him and dropped him in front of the world. Ali might never have gotten over that. The whole world was focused on that one night and even though the other fights were big they would never equal that one.
Mental warfare, fight hype. Ali obviously had a mean streak in him, I'd guess 99.999% of boxers do (the sport entails beating the hell out of another person for crying out loud).
Hyping the fight doesnt justify what Ali did. Ali took it way too far. He wanted to destroy Frazier as a person not just beat him as a boxer. Ali didnt want the black community to respect and admire Joe Frazier. He wanted to humiliate him and separate him from his people. It was low.
Ali was mean tot a lot of fighters, they won't talk about it though. Terrell is said to hate Ali, but they got him to say he didn't in that documentary on Ali opponents. Same with Ken Norton.
The personality clash. Mentally, Ali is an unstoppable force, and Frazier is an immovable object. And neither have any quit in them.
Stripping away the bull****,you've got it in a nutshell,Pachilles. I believe Muhammad always knew that Joe was going to be his biggest ever rival, long before they met in the ring.
