    Hopkins nearly beat Calzaghe.

The Hopkins knockdown had more effect, Joe was never in any danger of being stopped v Roy.

I was trying to be sarcastic or maybe just living in hope.

Yep. At 43 years old. A few earlier and Hopkins most likely wins. You are reinforcing my point.

Hopkins wasn't as cagey a few years earlier, there would've been more openings for Joe if it was earlier

Yeah, but you still need perfect timing and leverage from the legs.

Roy didn't hit Joe with any huge shots in that fight.

What would have happened if he'd have been in his prime and he'd have landed the kind of hooks that dropped Tate and Thornton, or the uppercut that knocked out Griffin?

We know Sir Joseph had a great chin, but I saw him get dropped against Mitchell and Salem, a long time before Roy and Bernard dropped him.

It would have been very interesting, because he'd have been fitter.

He stopped Mitchell 30 seconds later and that Salem was as awkward as they come

Agreed and that's why Hopkins style would be different, less cagey..Its a hard fight for Joe no matter when they meet, but I do think it would be slightly clearer for the valley boy a few year earlier. Joe was at the end too, his hands were done and his work rate style was only going to get slower at his age !

    Of course.

I was just pointing out that a younger version of Roy would have had more than enough power to have dropped him had he have caught him flush.

I remember Salem being really dirty.

I think it was in Newcastle.

He seemed to get under Joe's skin beforehand.
