214 is a like a throwback weight to the 1960s heavyweights. His stamina and speed seemed to be good at 230 so I don’t understand the need to cut that much weight. If anything, I thought he would continue to fill out his frame and gradually put on more weight over the years. I think he’d be fine at even 240-245.
He has a very broad frame and could definitely carry quite a few extra pounds. I think honestly for Joshua he would need to put on some weight otherwise he is going to get himself snapped like a twig.
Wilder's weight is a bit concerning, to be honest. He's always been a string bean, but at 32 you should be filling out, not coming in your lightest in years. People can talk about him wanting to be mobile, but at 214 on a six seven frame he's entering dangerously drained territory; there's a possibility he could actually be slower and less energetic if he can't generate the sustained energy over the twelve. And it's not like this isn't a trend. What's the end goal with all this? Is he eventually planning on moving down to cruiserweight?
I dont see any issue with it. Alot of Wilders defence is purely on reflexes and alot of his power is generated through speed. As he ages though reflexes may slow down, but by keeping himself lean he can keep his reflexes on point to the best they can be. Once his reflexes to avoid shots go he gets ICED- as he has a below average chin and lacks classical defensive techniques. So the strategy of Wilder getting heavier and heaver, or bulking up is very bad for him as it prematurely slows the reflexes down that he is overly reliant on defensively
There's no question Hes definitely in great condition. I just don't understand why people are making a fuss about how light he came in for the biggest fight of his career.
Riddick Bowe came into the Golota rematch in 'great condition' and ended up getting battered worse than the first time. Coming in at a low weight doesn't always equal a good thing; there comes a point of diminishing returns.
230 is coming in light and fit for a guy who is 6'7. 240 -245 would be about optimum for his size and frame. But 214, against a big puncher like Ortiz, people make a fuss because losing too much weight can have just as bad effects as putting too much on. 214 Wilder looks like he's ready to go have a lie-down, doesn't look at premium healthy fitness at all. Definitely looks ill or overtrained. Unless he's trying to make cruiserweight, there is no need to be so light for his large frame. It will give him more disadvantages than advantages IMO.
Is there any correlation between reflexes and weight? I'm not aware there is. Wilder isn't going to preserve his reflexes by coming in progressively lighter every fight to the point where he starts to become emaciated. That might actually have just as deleterious an effect as constantly blowing up between fights in the long run.
Maybe he's over trained maybe not hard to say until we see how he performs. As for the weight, it's surprising but not an issue. He was never going to stand and trade with Ortiz, for all his playing an idiot and heel in promoting himself he isn't so stupid to think he'd last 3 rounds standing in front of Ortiz. He's going to box and move and stay out of trouble. So coming in lighter won't effect him negatively as he isn't looking to engage in a physical fight where he'd need to weight and strength that comes with it. His weight is lower than normal but he's naturally a very skinny guy. He turned pro at 207lbs. When he did show up in the ring around 228lbs that was him on purpose trying to bulk up, I don't think he could go higher in weight naturally. 214-220lbs is a more natural weight for Wilder than 228lbs.
