The idea that Fury and Joshua were the 2 best heavyweights in the world when they fought in 2020 is a subjective opinion not fact. Ring Magazine subscribing to that notion doesn't make it a cold, hard objective truth. There are many rankings by Ring Magazine that I don't agree with. Like say Mike Tyson being the 3rd best heavyweight in the world prior to fighting Lewis or Michael Grant being top 5 when he faced Lewis or Phil Jackson being a top 10 heavyweight at any point in his career Ring Magazine has screwed up enough times that I don't think their ratings or championships should be accepted as gospel. I don't see anyone defending their many silly rankings over the years.
It's a lot easier to avoid defeats if you simply don't fight top guys. Wilder is the only guy generally considered a top 10 heavyweight Fury has fought since 2015. This notion that Wilder is the best heavyweigfht aside from Fury is based on what exactly...your opinion? Wilder's abilities are hard to gauge due to his resume. I think someone like Daniel Dubois would likely beat everyone Wilder has beaten and many don't even rank him in the top 10. Yoka as well. I think they could both get past Ortiz and Stiverne.
When Fury v AJ was being discussed, I had the belief that Wilder wouldn't fight anyone unless they had a belt. Like he believed he was above facing a top contender. Now here we are.
Three wins over clear top 10 ranked opponents: Stiverne I Ortiz I Ortiz II Nobody else was arguable to be ranked in the top 10 (I dont think Im forgetting anyone).
Even now the Ring has Rivas at #9 in the rankings despite one win in like 2 years against a journeyman, they are really looking at that Whyte loss in 2019 very fondly. I am actually working on a little project, taking a look at the heavyweights and who have actually fought guys considered top 10 at the time they fought (I'm trying to also incorporate the ring magazine ratings but their archive system leaves a lot to be desired. But you're right about Fury, besides the Wilder fights the last top 10 contender type he fought was Wlad in 2015. Edit: just double checked they have Rivas at 8!?!

Indeed. If someone wants to treat the Ring Magazine as the gospel truth and place great store in their rankings even after the Ring Magazine demolished whatever reputation they had with the rankings scandal in the 1970's (which they never recovered from), then I really don't know what to tell them.
20 pages in and still, no one believes you Also, you're overdue to post with the NEETzschean account. Didn't read.
Tyson Fury was the undefeated #1 contender and former Ring champion. Deontay Wilder was the undefeated #2 contender and had been undefeated for 12 years, was the reigning WBC champion and had made 10 successful title defenses. The only blemish on either of their records was a 12 round draw with each other.. Anthony Joshua was the #3 contender having lost eight months earlier when he was dropped four times and stopped by unrated late sub Andy Ruiz. Before the Ruiz rematch, Joshua was rated #4. So the rankings seemed quite appropriate when Wilder and Fury fought for the vacant Ring title.
Tyson Fury's best win in the 2 years preceding the Wilder rematch was over Otto Wallin. That hardly qualifies him to be the number #1 contender. Moreover, it's not clear the ring magazine belt should have been vacant in the first place. Klitschko vs Joshua was generally viewed by the public as number 1 vs number 2 due to Fury's inactivity. Also, none of this has much to do with ability as far as I can see. There are several active guys who I would pick to beat everyone Wilder has beaten such as Joyce, Hrgovic, Yoka, etc
Except Wlad and Wilder were not "top 10 contenders" but 10 and 5 year reigning champs with 10+ defences respectively. Whyte was not ranked anywhere near the top 10 when AJ beat him but he was likely always better than Breazeale, who was top 10 ranked and who many believe is a "bum". Unranked Wallin schooled Breazeale, yet the latter was a "top 10 win" and the former was not.
Wlad had been just as inactive as Fury and had been conclusively defeated in his backyard in his last fight 17 months before. AJ was not rated in the top 2 in 2017 as he had beaten Molina, Breazeale, Martin and unranked Whyte prior to Wlad. Had AJ fought and beat the unbeaten reigning WBC champion Wilder he could have been the Ring champ but he didn't and got battered by an unranked fringe contender instead, so he dropped down the rankings. Fury's past win over super-champ Klitschko, his wins on his comeback and his "draw" with Wilder in America had him universally recognised as one of the top 3 in 2018 and one of the top 2 in 2019 along with Wilder when AJ lost to fat Andy.
