True i dont know exactly why is this being said constantly but its not true, last year we had 2 boxer as highest payed athletes in the world and Wlad was like 20th or something like that, if it was dead or dying there would not be good money in it.
I remember reading something Fleischer wrote in the 50s about how much better the White Hopes of the 10s were than the contenders of that era. In retrospect the White Hope Era is looked upon as some kind of Tragic Farce, rather than the golden era old Nat seemed to think it was. Boxing has apparently been in decline since 1892, but somehow manages to keep chugging along. I don't think today is a strong era by any means, but as always there's an elite group of fighters who <insert cliche> "could have been successful in any era".
Nah, it needs fans to be convinced that the sport is honest and clean, which means a top to bottom changing of rules, getting rid of a lot of people who wield tremendous power in the sport now, etc. Especially cleaning up the judging and a single world champion at each weight. Plus we need fights on the networks, multiple basic cable channels, etc. One exciting fighter only brings attention to one fight or PPV card at a time. There are plenty of exciting fighters out there, but they need more exposure.
I don't think the era got that "weak." I think the era could more properly be described as the "unpopular era," which affects how we view the fighters, their accomplishments, and therefore the overall thought of the sport as a whole.
X 2 Promoters - which is the real evil and everything else trickles down and is so because of these TV Networks Commissions Judging Reffing PED use
Yes, all the fHW title ights in the 'glorious' 90s were amazing. On HBO. Glaring example: [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bchSHm2K0ws[/ame]
I wouldn't call it a weak era. Boxing has a very loyal fan base. And as long as fighters are still making good money there is obviously alot of interest there. If were basing this just on how popular boxing is,it will never get back to the point where its the top sport. In the US other sports like basketball and football have just took off as far as popularity.
I agree with you, it was disgusting. However, we had **** HW fights and big letdowns in any era in history. We should act like if unexciting HW fights (or hopeless mismatches, or heartless fighters, or dock workers getting a title shot, or guys taking a dive etc. etc.) are just a recent development.
The nineties were stacked though: Lennox Lewis Evander Holyfield Riddick Bowe Mike Tyson Michael Moorer Ike Ibeabuchi George Foreman Oliver McCall David Tua Tommy Morrison. Donovan Ruddock
