I feel Money, despite being one of the most gifted ever, is too drawn to the fame and limelight to stay away from boxing. I think he'll keep up these occasional fights until eventually someone upsets him. He'll continue fighting until he's past prime and loses
Its tough to say, really. I think he lacks the ambition to go up higher and take on the really tough challenges. He is also a very clever matchmaker, so there is a good chance he might retire unbeaten. The thing is, Mayweather is so hard to figure out. The Cotto fight might be his last for all we know. The intelligent move would be to fight Pacquiao after Cotto. I now think he'd beat Pacquiao, so why not collect that $50 million check, and call it a career. That would the smart move, imo. But like BigReg said...boxers seldom know when to let go. There was a time when people thought RJJ would never lose.
So many here say if he goes to 160, no way guys no way he will fight Sergio at 160 it would be suicide he has 0% chance against Sergio at 160!!! Floyd is smart enough to know he can not fight at 160!
atsch This poll. It appears a whopping minority on ESB either underrate or don't fully understand PBF. Two simple facts: He won't risk moving up higher than 154. **** the paydays, it's just too damn big. He's gilding the lilly with light middleweight as it is. People go on and on about Pacquiao's impressive weight climbing, but forget that PBF was at his absolute peak at super featherweight/lightweight. So many newjack "boxing fans" only came into the fold during Floyd's tenure at welterweight (and most of them fairly deep into it) and just assume that's what he always was. You'd think the first ten years of his pro career didn't exist, when really if you lop them off he's only 8-0 and not 42-0 (with several very good HOF caliber opponents notched on his bedpost). Floyd isn't an insecure validation-seeking glory hound like Roy Jones Jr., who risked the legacy-boosting ascent to HW because he craves approval, attention, and adoration. Floyd - while he isn't the same person in reality as in the persona he adopts to sell PPV's - does have money as his primary goal in this game. That's clear. Money first, but health and comfort a close second. The respect/admiration of the fans, or perception of his legacy?? Pfft. ****ing distant third, or more like twentieth. He is trying to maximize his payouts at 147/154, because no matter how much cash is left on the table when middleweights and super middles come negotiating hat-in-hand - Floyd is no fool. He knows he is only human and has physical limits. Climbing any higher than he has runs the risk of offsetting even the mastery of defensive skills acquired over a lifetime and his remaining physical abilities (which include some rapidly deteriorating legs) and getting him KTFO. Mayweather doesn't want to go out like that, trust me. If it's a matter of an extra ten million to face a monster with the size and style to leave him flat on his back and humiliated, or skipping that to face a far less dangerous welterweight/light middleweight for a still multi-million dollar payday - guess what? He's picking the latter. There isn't anyone south of MW who is a threat. Maybe Pacquiao could get a gift decision against him with the judges playing dumb and claiming to have scored on "aggression" - and hell, maybe that's about to happen with Cotto if he can avoid a cuts or accumulation stoppage (if my wacky conspiracy theory pans out, of Golden Boy snatching up Cotto now that he's a free agent and trying to set up a lucrative Pacquiao-Cotto II to ensure they get a piece of the Pac cash-out pie in the fear that the principals' stubbornness will prevent Mayweather-Pacquiao from ever happening...) - but there isn't anybody who regularly weighs 154 or less on fight night who has a serious chance to knock Floyd out. That isn't true once you cross the threshold to 160/168.
Yes... Co'z Floyd would avoid and duck a fighters who thinks is a threat to his health and to his worthless 0.
If I was bored enough I'd dig up the once weekly threads about May beating Pavlik. Don't forget the thread about Floyd "pop shoting" his way to victory over Valuev.
A couple of things. First off, Floyd gets paid 20-30 million no matter who he fights. He could fight a somewhat acceptable opponent and still get that much. Of course he can make noticeably more if he fights Martinez or Pac. But the point is, he will make a ton of money no matter who he fights. Well, almost anyone. Second, you are assuming that Floyd will continue to fight at an elite level. He is 35. No one stays on top forever. At some point, no matter how skilled he is, his loss in physical abilities will make him less effective. If he continues to fight (because of the huge pay days, which is a huge incentive to continue on fighting), at some point, he's going to go up against someone who will beat him. Not because they are better but because Floyd has slipped enough. Having said that, it wouldn't surprise me if he did retire undefeated but my opinion is that the amazing pay days will be too much of a lure for him to go out on top.
I guarantee you that if Calzaghe had made Floyd type money, he would not have retired after the Jones fight. It's a huge difference between making a few million per fight and making tens of milions. And i think at some point, he would've gone up against a Ward or Bute and simply lost. Again, not cause they are better (maybe Ward) but because Calzaghe would've been past his best and was ripe for a loss.
The thing is....as long as Floyd is undefeated...his marketability remains intact and he can demand huge pay days.... Most fighters retire after taking a bunch of loses and it deminishes their drawing power. Floyd could easily "go to the well" to many times considering how much money he demands, and it could eventually cost him. He could be a victim of his own success in a way.
Yes , Will say 154 is too high for him after he beats Cotto , because he knows Martinez is next. Will never share a ring with Manny because of PPV rights , Bob Arum , Steroids , sky is blue , grass is green ....
You are 100% correct. Look how Pac's career is in the toilet after his losses. Oh, wait....:think The average fan will support a guy that comes to fight. :deal
