Will we ever see scenes like this in Oz again?

sounds like i need to brush up on my boxing history, i had no idea that they only had 8 divisions etc. Has anyone seen the new Doco on Les Darcy? I just tried to purchase it from JB Hi Fi and they had sold out.

Ty, mid- divisions have been around since the early 1920's.. Light Welter 1923, Junior Lightweight 1921, light M/W 1962.. so a few more titles were involved before Lionel Rose won the Bantam Crown. Both Light Welter and Junior Lightweight Crowns were left unclaimed during the mid 1930's, until after the war. Even then with a couple of extra titles, most fans would have been able to name every champ, in each division. Impossible to name 1/10 of the current champs in 1/10 of the divisions today.

Whats the best book to read for a run down of a History in boxing?

 

Oz boxing? 'Lords of the Ring' by Peter Corris... 'Illustrated History of Australian Boxing' by Grantlee Kieza... 'Heroes of the Fancy' by Arnold Thomas... 'Undisputed' by Paul Upham... 'Great Australian Fights' by Ray Mitchell... or any of 30 different biographies.

Yeah... the doco is a few years old. Nice to see one of Darcy's early girlfriends being interviewed, and Ambrose Murray (recently deceased), and a very old Vic Patrick having a yarn about Darcy. Well worth getting.

 

They were real Fighters who fought for real World Titles,they never picked or chose there opponents just kept fighting those ahead of them to reach there final Goal,Champions in every sense of the Word.!!!!

 

its coz he was the first aboriginal to succeed on the world stage in sport.
it could of been fencing or snooker...it was still a massive first for the country.

 

The cavalcade for Lionel was also at lunch time in the middle of the City during the week... not to detract from the importance of his win, or the appreciation from his fans. The crowded city offices poured onto the street to see him.

As it is, 200,000 ventured to Maitland for Darcy's funeral..

Rita Tollis (mother of Mickey Tollis) was just a child during the funeral. She said that it would have been the perfect time to be a theif, as every house in Maitland district was empty.. all at the funeral.

 

Do you really think that's the case? Boxing had a much bigger following then.
