First of all Johnson was NOT in shape for this bout. As per Fleischer who was at the bout and reported from both camps Johnson felt he would beat Willard easily. He had spent years in Europe doing nothing but living it up with good food and great wine. He trained without any sense of urgency. In contrast Willard was in shape to fight the world that day and his trainers had given him a good fight plan. Jess would retreat standing straight up as Johnson attacked making punches fall short or lose impact. Then once into later rounds turn up the gas. It worked. Johnson exhausted himself and Willard came on for the win. This Johnson was not the same fighter who fought Flynn or even Moran.

It was not 110 degrees that day, which is also what Willard said. Not even close. In fact the weather was fairly nice. Cuba is in a temperate zone and as such the climate stays within a predictable and tolerable range all yr. Had it been 110 degrees it would have obliterated the highest temp ever recorded in cuba (102) and would have been blazingly hot for the average April temp in havana (86). In reality ringsiders said that after a light morning shower the day was slightly overcast and ideal for an outdoor boxing match. That day the high in southern Florida was in the 60s and in the southern most part of Cuba it was around 87. Havana is north of where that temperature was recorded though so it was likely a bit cooler which would put it right in the average range of Havanas April temperatures. 80+ degrees is still hot but it wasn't anywhere near as hot as Willard made it out to be. Johnson was the one making it hot for Willard that day.
