Not the case here. Pep is a consensus ATG with amazing skills. Now if it was Pac. vs. say Danny "Little Red" Lopez, and everyone was picking Lopez I would agree with you.
thanks for the insight. :good was pep more of a stand-up counterpuncher or a guzman type slick boxer who slips punches and then hops on his bike?
Wow, you have been around both of these guys. You must have quite a few boxing stories. Care to share any??
I'm just older than dirt, st. You might wanna check-out my writing site: http://home.earthlink.net/~joerein/
Pep didn't exactly float like a butterfly and sting like one; he had a tona KOs most people don't realize. He was a stand-up boxer that barely touched the ground, landing flurries of accurate punches from every angle and danced away in every direction. It was like watching the consummate bullfighter (Ya didn't wanna cheer; ya wanted yell OLE!) Except he'd rarely thrust home with a single shot. He got the kill by attrition.
Pep outboxes this guy to a 15 round decision ... one of the best left hand jabs in the biz - ever ... a great defensive style ... and great reflexes --
My Father watched Pep fight a few times and he said that Pep was unreal. Even with top competition he could turn it up a notch or two when needed and completly dominate. From what I understand he started slowly on occation just to give the audience a show and then close it as he saw fit. Manny is one of my favorites today but I would have to go with Pep.
Your dad was right, ZM. And as unreal as Willie was, what was more unreal: He could that from day one in the gym -- no long, painful journey to learn his craft -- a mosquito blessed with a divine gift. And he worked overtime to abuse it-- burned the candle at both ends and in the middle. It staggers the imagination how good he could've been had he spent as much time in the gym as he did in gin mills and the track.
I'da kicked his ass if I'da been able ta find'm. If they'da given points for how stupid ya look, I'da got the nod.
