Arguello said he learned a boxing lesson from Ernesto Marcel who was somewhat similar in style (and size at 5'6) to Willie Pep. [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c3-IzcLhlnY[/ame]
"More fluid". I could have said "less robotic" but i prefer a positive comparison where possible. Saddler is a stylist with a thug's reputation though. He held his hands low, feinted, used small moves to create space. Not the thug-puncher some want to paint him as (not you).
Well, Pep vs. Saddler is the obvious series to hone-in on when surmising either man, but in a way it's not always the best one. They were, on the whole, especially dirty fights where much of their good points went out in the window as they wrestled, heeled, back-handed and low-blow one another. As single fighting entities they were fantastic, but meshed together and you got an uglier picture. Notwithstanding the fact they shared great fights of course. Arguello's big downfall is his want for following a man who can skate across the ring. Pep would show him dimensions that he may never pick up on in a 10 fight series.
I love both guys. But Pep is all wrong for Arguello, Pep takes it 12-3 something like that with perhaps Alexis taking 3 of the last 5.
This is a really bad match for Arguello, especially if we're discussing the pre plane crash Pep. By the end of ten rounds, Willie would have clinched the scorecards.
