The problem is Winky had to really work to get those big shots in comparison to some fighters who get it handed to them the guy really earnt his stripes. Easy ATG.

Wright is a definite hall of famer, but falls short of all time great status.

The big question regarding Wright is whether or not he'll ever be in another meaningful fight again?

What is the logic in debating HOF status?

    That's a very empirical, yes-or-no black-and-white eventuality.

ATG can be debated to the end of time...ultimately, posterity will make some fighters officially HOF and some officially not. I don't see how it's debatable. Predictions can be made, but you cannot reasonably discuss the HOF merit of a fighter the way you can ATG status, as it is a very finite thing that will have a finite outcome...whereas ATG status remains forever in the realm of opinion.

Opinions and HOF merit seem to be logically at odds. It's up to a certain set of people who makes Canastota, and anybody else discussing it other than to guess what those people will decide is wasting their breath, yes? :?

Since there are no defined standards or rules as to who gets into the HOF, then discussion is a necessary and unavoidable eventuality. If there were set standards and rules, then it would be purely empirical, and there would be no need for discussion, unless you want to discuss about those standards and rules.

Since there are no set standards or rules, then we can guage a boxer's worthiness into the HOF by comparing their resumes with those who got in, and those that didn't. This requires discussion.

Yeah, but the people doing the discussing by and large aren't an exact match with the people doing the deciding (despite marginal overlap), are they?

ATG status will never be official. HOF is one thing or the other - you're either voted in or not. There is no body of arbitration devoted to ATG status. Therefore, one is subjective and one is not. Unless you're one of the people who votes on HOF admission, your opinion contributes nothing. Whereas with ATG status, everybody's opinion is equally subjective and there is no be-all end-all authority like there is with the HOF.

Okay, I gottcha. The general public has no say who gets into the HOF or not. Like you said, it's only the few who actually vote who can decide. We may be wasting our breath, but it's sure fun :) Besides, I hope that any institution such as the IBHOF would listen to the public's opinion on who gets in or not. We may not greatly influence those who vote, but we may put enough pressure to bump them in the right direction (hopefully). The power of suggestion is always there also.

Winky is a lock for the HOF

ATG? I guess we have to debate what is the cutoff point for being a ATG. Is the cutoff point at 75? 100? 150?

Has there been 150 fighters better than Winky?
