Good point, but I think that was the last time we really saw Winky utilize his defensive game by using good footwork. Since then, he's become a more offensively oriented fighter, perhaps trying to gain more fans. With the exception of the Soliman fight, which I didn't see, but I heard Soliman almost handed him his ass, Winky has been more or less the aggressor in all his fights. It was him cornering Taylor, him pummeling Quartey, and him chasing Bernard around the ring.
WInky By UD, It takes more than just power to beat WInky Wright. People here underestimate WInk Winky by UD
If Winky was anywhere near his prime this would be a good fight, I might even favour him The current near shot version I envisage standing there, no lateral movement, while Pavlik hammers 1-2's against his turtle defence gradually wearing him down for a stoppage
I think Winky could really trouble Pavlik, make him look bad, because he's so awkward stylistically. But Winky would have to completely dominate Pavlik to get a decision. There's absolutely No way that HBO's going to allow its new goldmine to lose a decision without having his ass handed to him. There's far too much money to be made with Pavlik remaining champ, and virtually none if Winky becomes champ. It's about PPV numbers.
I voted on Winky on points but only if Winky shows he's still on top. The Tito or the Taylor form is good enough in my book to outsmart and outjab Pavlik... But it's hard to tell how good he is in 2008... he fought last time in 2007 in LHW and everyone rememberes as a bad performance vs. Hopkins. It wasn't a bad performance. It was a good performance 3 division north of his natural weight class vs. a very awkward, defensive fighter. He couldn't pull it off but he easily outpointed Quartey before that. And he was p4p#3 a year ago so don't count Winky out yet... It's him who prizeing himself out but what can you do? I'd really like to see what is Pavlik capable of vs. a defensive genious...
Wright would get beat down and stopped late. Not only is Pavlik a lot bigger and stronger but he's much younger, can match Winky's workrate and Wright's legs are gone. Pavlik TKO10:yep
If Wright was in is late twenties, and a natural 160, I would be far less confident, but that simply isn't the case. Comparing common opponents isn't the best tool for analysis, but in this case we have two common opponents and seven fights fights: Winky/McKart X 3, Winky/Taylor, and Pavlik/Mckart, plus Pavlik/Taylor X 2. I think how they handled their common opponents is strong evidence in favor of Capfund's analysis. Boo
