Wlad had 1 of the best left hooks I've seen from a heavyweight, watch his fight with Mercer. He doesn't use it because it allows left hookers/right counters to hit him. What he does is basic, not pretty but it's effective and it's very hard to beat because he has 1 of the best jabs in HW history, 1 of the best right hands in HW history, 1 of the fittest HWs in history a great left hook when he uses it, he's 6'7 with some of the longest arms in HW history and 240lbs of pure conditioned muscle that also hits like a muel. He just happens to use very boring strategies And yes all those guys need to be prime to beat him pretty much. Because he throws 70 punches a round and his jab is hard to get past. Past prime Ali is arguably 0-3 to Norton and he's going to beat Wlad? He might but I'd probably pick Wlad I'm not a fan of Wlad but credit and honesty where it's due
1. In Germany boxing is free TV therefore nobody paid or got "fooled". Btw. you watched it too, didn´t ya? Got fooled? 2. In Germany generally boxing is watched as a sport, not entertainment. We can admire "boring" boxers for beeing good at what they are doing. Most still would like to see Wlad more aggressive though. 3. another dominant showing from Wlad in which he beat a mandatory challenger. Business as usual.
I can't believe that with all the great athletes we have in this country, we can't find somebody who can learn to box at a young age and grow up to be badass fighter. All these dudes are going into other sports and leaving us with guys like Tony Thompson to represent US heavyweights. That was the most pathetic title challenge I have ever seen, didn't throw one good punch the entire fight. I don't blame Wlad for fighting his boring style, It sells out soccer stadiums over there in Europe. However if he had to make a living fighting in the US it would be a different story. Still scared to death to get hit. A bum like Thompson should have been put down in 1 round. Imagine if a guy like Ray Lewis had taken up boxing at a young age. Not saying he would have the talent, but you get the idea. Hell, Ray Lewis now could probably kick Thompson's ass.
Wait until Wlad retires, everyone will complain about the quality of the champions Although we'll probably get more competitive fights
you don't see in boxing many great athletes. i mean, wlad, lewis and bowe are recognised as big, athletic guys, and in nba they would be small and slow. also nfl, wrestling, sprinting has some of the greatest, strongest athletes in world, but boxing is called sweet science, that's way you can see for example fat toney beating up a ripped evander holyfield. also mental game, like joe louis said, everybody has a plan, until they got hit. if you are great athlete, doesn't mean you have what it takes to be a great boxer(fighter)
I have the July issue of The Ring in front of me. Thompson is NOT in the top ten. You have missed out Dimitrenko ,currently rated at no 4 by The Ring. Thompson has only twice been in the annual Ring ratings in 2007 he was no 9 in2009 he sneaked in at no10. Who would I rather Wlad fight? Someone he has not allready beat ,who is under 40 years old ,and who is ranked in a credible top 10. Someone who has beaten a top 10 fighter at some stage of their career. How about Povetkin no2, Dimitrenko no4 , Helenius no5 , Boytsov no6.? All would be an improvement on Thompson who ten years ago, at 30 was decidedly underwhelming . By the way, Thompson has not been in the the Ring's top ten during 2012 I suspect you think Vitali's next challenger is a credible opponent too? .Unranked and untested Manuel Charr ,he certainly fits the criteria for a Klit challenger. The heavyweight division, already dismally thin on talent is cheapened still further by these farcical promotions. Thompson has never beaten a Ring rated top ten heavy, neither has Maurice Harris whom he beat to" earn" his second title shot. You do know that K2, the Klits promotional banner demands that in the event of you beating either brother you must then defend against the other ,and also give them another option don't you? Open your eyes for christ sake.
Thompson was mandatory. If Wlad wouldn´t have fought him he would have lost a belt and you would have whined about another beltholder.
I don't think any of them are 'credible' in the sense that they are likely to give Wlad a fight. That's the problem. Povetkin is rated highest and has openly ducked his chance to fight Wlad for about 5 years straight now. Dimitrenko and Helenius were already discredited by lesser fighters than Wlad. If Wlad fought them it would be another shitty fight and similar criticism. He probably will fight someone there next, and it will be no more exciting. It was only 12 months ago a lot of people were saying Haye would provide a test. I didn't believe that, because David Haye is as crap as all the others, but it was the fight everyone wanted Wlad to take. He won another landslide decision against another guy who soon realised he had no chance against Wlad. Maybe Wlad should take on 2 or 3 of these guys in one night, to make it interesting.
He made the list. http://ringtv.craveonline.com/ratings/heavyweight/ Dimitrenko was quite rightly kicked off when Pulev thrashed him. Wlad has beaten his mandatory and retired Thompson. That's good.
http://ringtv.craveonline.com/ratings/heavyweight Thompson at #11..which is technically #10 as they are counting the Champion as #1. I don't think many would disagree those fighters would be better opponents but Helenius and Boytsov have been battling injuries and been largely inactive, while Povetkin has refused Wlad several times. Dimitrenko wouldn't face the brothers and just got knocked out by upstart, Pulev. Say what you will about Thompson, he upset koed the upstart Witherspoon he was being fed to, stopped Harris, and Chambers didn't show up for the eliminator. Credit to the old man for doing more than most to push for a fight with Wlad. Really he's done more than Boystov and Dimitrenko.
Yeah, he might be old and crap but he's been active and winning. And was willing to fight Wlad again.
Eddie Chambers probably disagrees with this... if he has finally woken up. His style emphasizes his physical advantages and diminishes those of his opponents. Note that when he fought Thompson, a guy of his own height, that Wlad actually fought smaller in order to attack. Usually he uses his height and length at all times. Agreed. I am ready for the next wave to take over but you have to give Wlad his due.
