At least as much. My point is would the smaller heavyweights as Dempsey and my man Joe Louis, hit hard enough to topple the bigger heavyweights of today.? Most certainly...The left hook that Jack Dempsey had to REACH up to floor the 250 pound Jess Willard was an amazing feat. For Dempsey to throw a punch over his head and drop Willard who was never floored BEFORE was something...And the tremendous right hand that Joe Louis at 200 pounds knocked out the front teeth and mouthpiece of rugged Paolino Uzcudun [an earlier edition of George Chuvalo], was as hard a right hand ever landed...
Willard was a crude, unskilled hillbilly farmer with a pitchfork. Furthermore...Willard was 37 years old, 20lb overweight, and coming off a 3 year layoff. Willard looked like he trained on bacon, hash, and wheel barreling goat **** all day. Willard knew more about milking cows than he did about boxing skills.
My point was that "unskilled" that Willard may have been, he could take a punch , and was NEVER floored BEFORE, suffice to say. Jack Johnson hit Willard with every punch in his arsenal for TWENTY FIVE rounds under a 105% degree Havana sun, and couldn't hurt him at all. I know S it is hard to give for you, Dempsey his due, but try it, it wouldn't hurt...peace.
We have the Alcoholics Anonymous, maybe we should start another group called the Nostalgia Anonymous for the people in the classic forum You are just trying too hard guys. I love this forum.
Yes, this does seem to be the place where nostalgic "historians" assemble - to reassure each other that modern boxers suck and would be schooled by the greats of yesteryear. Some truly hilarious stuff can be found here!
In 2014 under K2 Rules with K2 Ref etc. Dempsey had no chance. Put Wlad in a Timemachine and send him back to Dempsey Aera with these brutal Rules at these time (backfist or hit when oppenent got his count) Wlad get knocked out in first three Rounds.
Exactly this. Strip Wlad of all holding and fouling and he has no chance. Without K2 rules Wlad is just an ordinary man.
Modern boxers are great imo. Two of my top 3 are from the last twenty years. That's not to say Klitschko will beat Dempsey though.
I find it rather silly to bet on a guy who had about an 18 month prime and then sat on his ass and ducked his best opposition over a guy who has dominated the division for 8+ years. The burden of proof is much better fulfilled by one than the other.
You sir are so obsessed in your hatred of Jack Dempsey that you obscure my point that Willard NEVER floored before ,was hit by a tremendous left hook by Dempsey thrown from a difficult angle upwards to reach Willard's chin. Instead of addressing my post, you have to ignore my valid point and call Willard a cow milker...For your edification Jess Willard whatever his faults took a punch better than any of your modern hero's. Please stick to the subject and try to eliminate your distaste for Jack Dempsey who I'm sure never harmed you personally...
The precedent set by Sullivan, Johnson, Jeffries, on was not to fight everyone. I dont know why Dempsey did not fight Wills it would have been a good fight for him and even the smaller Greb but Willard did fight Dempsey and Jess was a strong guy. We will say Jess was inactive but the manner in which Dempsey destroyed him was impressive for the day, Jack had some good fights and even a rusty Dempsey impressed with his VICIOUS KO over Sharkey and the long count vs Tunney. Jack's inactivity hurt him and you could see the rust but his power & speed and meanness were there, It would take the best JD to get to Wlad and Wlad is now a 63-3 Heavyweight Champion that may have a couple of years left, possibly dangerous years but he is a specimen of condition and activity that should be commended I hear both sides but prime to prime a super fight with Dempsey dangerously alive and Wlad with a serious plan
I don't care about his durability. Yes, Willard could take a punch. I am not impressed. What impresses me about a big man is if he possesses quality boxing skills. Skills are far more important than Durability. Willard did not possess any skills. He may have taken a better punch than some modern heavyweights, but he doesn't possess there boxing skill level.
Those who can't see how boxing champions developed from touring amateur show contesters to true professional, ranked international athletes will always be woefully inadequate to judge these cross-generational bouts. Dempsey & Co. had one foot in the past, one in the future, between barnstormer carnival barkers and carefully contrived, ballyhooed match-ups against no-hopers. In this sense, they were truly revolutionary… and therein the real credit is due.
Dempsey did not fight Wills no, and his legacy is bruised accordingly, but are we to forget that Wladimir let his brother take care of the man who crushed him? This is much worse. Playground politics in a boxing ring.
