what's the difference between this wlad and today's version? someone's who has been knocked out brutally.
After reading the article on the main page about this fight I thought it was a good time to resurrect this thread. Looking at this fight it is obvious Puritty is a boxer of limited skills, in against a very athletic and skilled boxer. But Puritty had a lot of things going for him that more recent opponents of the Klitschko's haven't and the number 1 thing was that he was IN SHAPE. he was not a fat bum and he was a big man he is almost as big as Wlad. 2 he had a tight defence even if it was crude and he knew how to take a punch and what to do when he was hurt, and he was hurt a couple of times in the fight. 3 he applied constant pressure this was the real reason Wlad was so active Puritty was in his face and hitting hard when he got close forcing Wlad to fight, and when Wlad tried to clinch Puritty was strong enough to get out and hit hard back, not letting Wlad have a rest. Puritty is different to todays journeymen in that he was not fat and he was fit and had a good basic boxing knowledge and ability, lets see what happens when Haye fights Wlad but Haye is fast hits hard and is very fit too, but he has a leaky defence and a questionable jaw, he needs to fight more like Sanders against Wlad. If only there were a few more Journeymen like Puritty now.
This idea that he just fell over from exhaustion (which i ahve always been told) is completely ridiculous, imo. Just like the comments on the Brewster fight and the same even happened to George Foreman in the Jungle. The work rate he helped obviously tired the fighters in this case, but the big shots their opponents landed are what caused the exhaustion, not throwing too many punches! If Wlad eased up, Purity wouldnt have. This is a simple case of Wlad being beaten by a fighter who dug deeper and won. I think he actually looked quite reasonable, as did purity, but Purity ended up winning. It is actually a shame that we didnt see a rematch and/or trilogy. But i suppose purity Vitali is the defacto rematch we get with the klitchskos.
Wlad fought at too fast a pace- which is partly his fault, partly his trainers' fault, and partly a credit to Puritty for forcing him to maintain that pace. He just happened to be in with the wrong guy at the wrong time. But this is boxing! How many fighters could fight all 60 of Wlad's professional fights and come away with only 3 losses and the run he has managed over the past 5 years? Only the greats and only the ones with the best longevity
People take away allot of credit from Purrity saying 'Wlad beat himself'. Bull****, Wlad didn't fight a well paced fight but Purrity's punches to the body and head are what caused the stoppage against a tired Wlad and he was pressuring Wlad from the mid rounds Its a bit of a similar situation to Haye-Thompson really with a young fighter punching themselves out
If Joe Louis or Ali fought Vitali once and Wladimir twice , taking some McCline punches on the way and having 2 Toney , 1 Jeremy Williams 1 Robert Hawkins , 1 Eddie Chambers (Louis may have found him relatively doable) and 1 Yanqui Diaz bum of the month rests , then you would not have them in your top 10.
Weird how Puritty only had 4 12 rounders in his whole career . One should wonder how it would have looked if all his fights since , say , the 20th-25th were 12 rounders. Yes , I was told already , they took less than 12 cuz they weren't title fights. Vitali should have rematched him though , at least to have any justification to call for a Lewis rematch himself.
he was stopped 2 other times besides vitali..once in the first round in his 2nd pro fight and another fight in 6 on cuts
