Actually, yes good one, the win over Robinson for Jones is never ever brought up in his favour, it's always just put down to the lay-off. I read one book that just said Robinson lost 'clumsily'. H econstantly applied pressure that night, and deserves some level of credit, and i would say definitely more than he gets.
He certainly deserves credit for upsetting Robinson and I'd say that he is given a certain amount of it since most people nowadays probably wouldn't know who he was if not for him beating Sugar Ray. Not talking about the people here of course but the more casual fans of boxing. Robinson did look rather terrible, partly because 'Tiger' Jones was a better fighter than his record indicates. Not someone who you would want to take on in just your second fight back after a three year retirement, because Jones would surely put your legs and stamina to test with his relentless pressure and ability to take punishment.
Memphis Al Jones perhaps deserves a mention--he certainly had a terrible record 11-35-2 with 7 ko's, but his ko victories included Boone Kirkman and Tony Longoria, and he had Jerry Quarry down twice and in deep trouble. For such a bad fighter, fairly impressive feats.
How about Valuev? Not a truly terrible fighter but great by no means. Has Holyfield, Lyakhovich, Ruiz, McCline, Larry Donald, Etienne, Nobles, and CW champ Marcelo Fabian Dominguez. Pretty solid.
LOL, I can see why you would think so, as to many of us, there is only one Stadium in Liverpool; Anfield! But actually Liverpool Stadium is a now defunct (I believe) Stadium with a rich boxing history, indeed it has played host to the future Heavyweight Champion of the World....... 'Neon' Leon Spinks early in his pro career (on the undercard of a John Conteh WBC title defence). I am probably wrong but I am sure it hosted the Holligan/Neary fight in the early 90s, although according to boxrec (which is often, but not always right), the fight happened at Goodison.
Yeah you're right mate, i'm from Liverpool myself, i knew about the old Stadium but didn't put two and two together for some reason when i was having a look at Tiger's record in a book i have and saw a few fights took place in Liverpool. Yeah the Neary fight was labelled 'The Nark in the Park!', the park itself is right in between Anfield and Goodison, the only think separating them. Al Francis was telling me his dad used to box there, and was always a great atmosphere

No, a child of the 70/80s, thus one of them rather nasty southern Liverpool fans, who is so loyal that he has been to five matches at Anfield; countless over the years in London, but still......
