Which flaws in his style and limitations would that be? Just asking since i haven't seen much of him at LHW.
He just wasn't very defensively aware despite his high guard, and given the right opponent, as a slick boxer like Leslie Stewart (who was on the downslope by this time) showed, this flaw could be exposed, and likely would've to a higher degree against a higher level opponent. Against Frankie Swindell he was hurt badly and nearly stopped before coming back to finish him later on. His chin wasn't better at LHW IMO, if anything the constant draining made him even weaker, lessening his durability. Defensive ineptness combined with a crackable chin doesn't bodde well for someone with a limited offensive skillset (he had a good, stiff jab and left straight, but his secondary repertoire wasn't very creative) who's also easy to push back and force the fight against due to his skinny frame. Typically he never had anyone of any skill imply such a strategy on him, which is why he was able to blow most of them out eventually. But against a Qawi, Galindez, Torres, etc he'd have been out-muscled and chin-checked, and he wouldn't have passed the test IMO.
If it seems like I have an agenda out on Moorer, I don't. I just get tired of the overrating that he's constantly subjected to, particularly in the General Forum with those who haven't seen a great deal of footage of him or are just going by what they've heard. He was better as a HW the way I see it.
Moorer was a superb boxer at his very best. For such a flowing southpaw he wasn't particularly a mover, which is strange to some degree. And at heavyweight he was hardly a bomber. He did lack discipline when under Steward at the Kronk. McClellan was another who wanted to do things his own way. Very 'up and down' type of characters mentally. Moorer was also meant to be an argumentive person when getting down to work. Offensively, while catching the eye, he also tended to be 'basic'. Solid fundementals but just not enough variation to really impress.
I wish Mike wouldnt have skipped cruiser, those extra pounds could have benefited him greatly,He wouldnt have to cut so much or be completely out of his realm at heavyweight. He just wanst built like a holyfield to take those shots
id give him a better than 50/50 shot against all of those mentioned except charles who would stay too busy for him
Moorer did have the power to be a threat to anyone in the LHWs. But he did not do anything concrete in the LHWs to merit putting him above the guys you mention in your 1st tier list and some of the guys in the 2nd tier. And Qawi was not a second tier LHW.
I think that he would have the potential to beat some of the all time great light heavies. I think that his chances are much better if the fight is held above 175 lbs which is not an unreasonable scenario given that guys like Charles Moore and Gibbons fought many fights above that weight.
