Let's say a prime Maxie in there with Larry instead of Cooney .What are we getting ?A classic ..A hard night for Larry ..or a one sided beating ?

    Really?

    "A prime Maxie in there"
"A hard night for Larry, or a one sided beating? "

Sure seems like a prime Baer v Holmes thread to me.

of course, Baer was elite titlist. Cooney only got a pass because he was strong and the only GWH of the time.

No. Baer is a product of a pumped up middle weight and cruiser weight era. He can transform some mass into power, if he´s not missing with that amateurish technique, and he can take a punch, thats it.
Cooney had timing, mobility and power in his prime. Holmes would totally expose crude Baer.

Max Baer would probably do worse than Cooney over the entire match.

Baer could take rounds off, mess around, and rely on his athleticism too often. Quite simply he could get lazy.

Baer was a pressure fighter when he wanted to be, at least for a few rounds, in those rounds he would punish Holmes and do much better overall.

Cooney on the other hand was a steady as she goes, solid fighter at all times during the match. He was more consistent. But he did not have the stamina to stay with Larry. IF Cooney did not KO you early you could beat him because of his stamina issues, and because you could figure him out and time him.

Holmes is not going to be beat by an inconsistent fighter, he is far to well rounded and fights every round. Unless you could match it, he is going to beat you by decision , and at other times he would wear you down and KO you.

Baer is not going to be wore down, nor knocked out by Holmes, but he himself is to inconsistent to really pressure Holmes enough to win. Holmes will win this on points.

Baer makes it much more fun though, and is going to make it tough on Holmes.

No, he wouldn't do better, he'd almost certainly do worse.

Given Cooney didn't really provide much of a challenge i would not be surprized to see Baer go better.

The fight scorecards from the guys that count, when the fight
was stopped in the 13th round. Exactly why the "inexperienced" C00ney
needed the Mike Weaver / other strong challenger type fight before going
after "top of his game" Holmes.
i.e., a knockdown or 2 late by C00ney, changes the overall fight perspective.

Cooney didn't get within light years of dropping Holmes and the cards whether they count or not were most ordinary.

He did come light years within taking Holmes out with a left hook to the body.
