Williams could probably do well at 160, but jumping right on Pavlik is a really bad idea. I do not care one wit about him by passing 154. That is not one of the original 8 divisions, so the jump from welter to middle used to be fairly common. However, the jump from Quinitana at 147 to Pavlik at 160 is a bridge to far. I'd rather see Williams take on someone like McKart or Ornelas, and then step up to a Zuniga level fighter. That would be the path to success at 160. The course he is on is the road to his own assasination.
Judah swollowed pride for a 100K title shot and it paid off (some ) in the end. WInky should follow suit and accept this "low" offer of a mill.
If he had a tune up and looked good I wouldn't have a problem but going right after Pavlik will sit him right next to Vargas as a ruined fighter .
This boils down to Calzaghe going with Jones, AA doing his mandaotry and who HBO is willing to pay for. I guess HBO's 'sell' here is they look the same size in the ring and are both champions? Remember, Arum has taken a number of fights to HBO who has turned them down. Rubio, etc.... And Pavlik's choice? A $2.5 mill payday or sit at home..... I think if Winky was offered what was reported here, he simply should have taken it. I think the point is he is willing to make less than Kelly for this fight, but not MUCH less.
Hard to say. His trainer is from Youngstown, so there are occasional interviews with him. He may have called and 'instigated' the article. So, if the trainer wants the fight, I'd have to think Winky wants the fight. Of course the trainer hasn't had a pay day in over a year......
If I were handling Paul, I'd put him through a logical progression at 160 similar to what I mentioned above. A couple solid guys off the "C" list, and then some tough SOB like Zuniga for example. If I think like a boxing fan, I really don't like Pavlik/Williams. However, as much as it pains me to say this, if I think like a trainer, I have to say Williams is better for Kelly than sitting for 8 months and then fighting Abraham in January. We're not talking about a seasoned vet here. We're talking about a 26 year old kid with a grand total of 127 rounds of boxing on a resume' that consists of a couple big fights, a couple "B-" guys, and a bunch of tomato cans. Pavlik should not sit for 8 months.
I understand why the fight makes financial sense but it hurts Pavlik in the mean time and hurts Williams in the long run . I don't think considering what we have seen with Vargas and Reid should a fighter be thrwon to the wolves like this with out a gradual step up first before getting a shot at the title one and fighting a proven power puncher in the Ghost .. Now should Pavlik turn down this money I wouldn't knock him completly because hes gotta eat but I think he should defiently weigh other options before a payday until the mega fight later this year gets made .
