Yeah it was shown on Versus channel before being bought out by the UFC. I remember watching their first ever PPV Aldo-Faber which was advertised as the biggest fight ever in their promotion. Alot of good fighters came out of the WEC.
Fondly, yes. I have the crap luck of being the guy that is a fan of all the major competitors and "challenger brands" to a market leader that ends up outliving them. In the nineties was an ECW & WCW mark, and didn't care for WWF (which then became a monopoly for almost two decades). In the following decade or so, I loved Pride, Strikeforce/EliteXC, Bellator and WEC (the last of which is now apparently defunct with the PFL gobbling up Bellator?) - and after Zuffa took over, didn't like the UFC or its increasingly annoying meathead fanbase.
It's been a really long time, but I seem to remember some of Miguel Torres' fights being pretty awesome.
